Good book, but hard to follow

If you never used Unity or you don't have any notion of programming, don't take that book.

But if you do, this book is a treasure. A raw diamond that don't tell you only how to do it, but encourage you to do some stuff yourself.
As Thomas Finnegan say, "Have a go hero"... and get this book :)

Sometimes quite complex scripting but not too complex though.

Evolution of Strategic Management Theory

Implanting Strategic Management is a compilation of a life-timework that organizes the major contributions in the field under oneumbrella, as Ansoff ingeniously develops a model that divides the competitive environment into five levels of turbulence: 1) repetitive, 2) expanding, 3) changing, 4) discontinuous and 5) unforeseen. His strategic success theorem states: For optimal success of an organization, the strategic aggressiveness (both technological and marketing) and the components of capability (both managers and organizational climate, competence and capacity) must match the level of environmental turbulence in which the organization competes. Ansoff uses a five-point integral scale to also measure the corresponding five levels of strategy: 1) stable, 2) reactive, 3) anticipatory, 4) entrepreneurial and 5) creative and the corresponding five levels of capability: 1) custodial, 2) production, 3) marketing, 4) strategic and 5) flexible, as he develops a strategic diagnostic questionnaire to obtain the perceptions of the general managers of any organization. When there is alignment or minimal gap between the average level of competitive environment and each of the components of strategy and capability, then the organization should have optimal success, which has been validated by several doctoral dissertations under Ansoff. This book is a comprehensive integration of several of Ansoff's scholarly articles, enhanced with each edition. Well thought out concepts involving strategic segmentation, resistance to change, optimizing strategic portfolio, strategic dimensions of technology, societal strategy issues, real-time strategic response to managing surprising changes, strategic issue management,and environmental surveillance for strong signals and weak signals in anticipating environmental change. Ansoff's theory says that at levels 1 to 3, a firm can extrapolate the future from the past. However, at level 4 (discontinuous) and level 5 (surpriseful), strategic management must be used by an organization to realistically plan for future successes in a highly turbulent competitive environment. Ansoff's theory applies to all types of organizations, and he explains how industries can have unexpected shifts from one level of turbulence to another, as in the case of Apple Computer Corp. When Apple created the personal computer, it also created a whole new marketplace with new customers at an initial turbulence level of 5, which shifted to a level 3 of marketing mentality, which seemed to be why Steve Jobs, a creative visionary, was replaced by Scully, a marketing guru, as the Board wanted to milk their "cash cow" and not be continuously creating new dimensions. However, when the environment shifted up to level 4, Apple almost went out of business when they did not respond fast enough. Level 4 is discontinuous, where the future is only partially predictable from the past, and it requires 4) entrepreneurial strategy and 4) strategic capability of the firm for optimal success. Steve Jobs was brought back in as interim CEO, and he was able make Apple once again competitive by enhancing the company's technological and marketing strategy, as well as its organizational capability, by bringing the firm's strategy and capability components up to level 4, so as to be successful. (Note: The above scenario is used by the reviewer as a realistic example of Ansoff's theory being applied in the real world.) In summary, Ansoff's work is far beyond anything published in the field, and one of the most comprehensive empirical studies that validates his complete theory is called "The Financial Performance of Technology-Driven Firms Aligning Strategy, Capability and Environment" by Richardson, John F. 1996. Many books are available about strategic managment. Authors such as Michael Porter and Peter F. Drucker, etc. provide the reader with an insight of many business problems. However, their solutions to solve complex problems in the business world seem to be simplistic, therefore, not sufficient.
Ansoff's approach is different. Complex business problems occurring in a global and especially volatile environment require specified or customized solutions. A business consultant or a graduate student will find a detailed roadmap to solve strategic management problems while reading the book.

Overall I enjoyed this book very much but like another reviewer mentioned readers were left wondering what happened to Birdie's family at the end of the story. I almost feel like the author left things unresolved between her and her family because it is supposed to be a part 2. Whatever the case I definitely think that the author is a good story teller and I look forward to reading more from her.

To be honest the book is readable. It doesn't grab your heart or touch your soul or anything but it's readable. What makes this mediocre book a one star, besides the grammatical errors and the weird change in Birdie's father's last name, is that all of the people of color portrayed in the book were tinged in stereotypes or just plain old horrible. Birdie's father, her mother's lover, the extended family, the Mexican maid... I guess to be fair there were a bunch of not so nice white characters too but I felt there were more fleshed out. I mean I got to the end of the book felt sorry that Birdie had not met anyone of color in the book with whom she had formed a bond. I'm probably focusing on the wrong thing here but yeah...

Absolutely loved this hidden gem! Didn't want to stop reading! Enjoyed the flashbacks, story development, intricacies and mysteries revealed throughout about Birdie and Wes. Yes, Birdie was a frustrating heroine who didn't want to accept the love right in front of her, but with her history the reader can understand why. I'm glad I discovered this author and hope to see more.

About the Author
Michael Cummings is the author and coauthor of a number of widely used college textbooks, including BIOLOGY: SCIENCE AND LIFE; CONCEPTS OF GENETICS; GENETICS: A MOLECULAR PERSPECTIVE; ESSENTIALS OF GENETICS; HUMAN HEREDITY; and HUMAN GENETICS AND SOCIETY. He has also written articles on aspects of genetics for the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology and has published a newsletter on advances in human genetics for instructors and students. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University. His doctoral work, conducted in the laboratory of Dr. R.C. King, centered on ovarian development in Drosophila melanogaster. After a year on the faculty at Northwestern, he moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago, where for many years he held teaching and research positions. In 2003, he joined the faculty in the Department of Biology at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and currently holds the title of Research Professor. His current research interests involve the organization of DNA sequences in the short-arm and centromere region of human chromosome 21. He is engaged in a collaborative effort to construct a physical map of this region of chromosome 21 for the purpose of exploring molecular mechanisms of chromosome interactions. At the undergraduate level, he has focused on teaching genetics, human genetics for non-majors, and general biology to majors and non-majors. He has received awards given by the university faculty for outstanding teaching, has twice been voted by graduating seniors as the best teacher in their years on campus, and has received several teaching awards from student organizations.

A really good book that explains, in understandable terms, the principles of heredity. Many examples are used and can be researched to help the reader better understand the topic at hand.

Easy required read

This is a required text for my genetics class, however I feel like it's my easiest read for the semester. The author does a good job of providing clinical case studies related to concepts covered in each chapter and has excellent summary tables and figures. Also, the additional online questions are an excellent study aid. This book is expensive for the actual size but amazon had the best deal around.

About the Author

Romily Bernard graduated from Georgia State University with a literature degree. Since then, she's worked as a riding instructor, cell phone salesgirl, personal assistant, horse groom and exercise rider, accounting assistant, and, during a very dark time, a customer service representative. Of course, now she's a YA novelist.

Romily currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Her first novel, Find Me, placed first in the YA Unpublished Maggie Awards (given by Georgia Romance Writers) and won the Golden Heart Award for Best YA Romance from the Romance Writers of America.

What I Liked:

I have to be honest - I don't remember very much of book one. Not because it was bad or anything - I was on the blog tour for Find Me a year ago... a year is a long time for forget lots of things. Around this time last year, I was acclimatizing to my freshman year of college, falling for a boy whom I knew would break my heart, getting ready for midterms... so honestly, I didn't really remember much from the first book. And I thought the first book was a standalone, so I was really content with the ending, and didn't really commit details to memory.

Nevertheless, Bernard made it really easy for me to read this one with no trouble. It was totally okay that I didn't recall details from book one - I remembered the gist of things, but most names and events went over my head. Bernard introduced and reintroduced information in a way that I found helpful, with all the holes in my brain.

Wick thought she was finished with Carson and his work for her. But he blackmails her, and she starts working for him, on a new and dangerous project. Murders pile up, and Wick discovers new details about her mother's death, and Griff is pulling away from her, and everything is supposed to be great but nothing is.

The beginning of this one was slow. I remember I was at like, 18%, and thought I was much farther in than that. But after that, things really pick up. I found myself interested in Wick's mother's death, and in Milo. Those two "things" kept my interest in this book. I knew there was more to the mother's death than a suicide.

So this book balances many things - Wick's work for Carson, Wick's discovery of information on her mother's death, Wick's relationship with her adoptive mother, Bren, with Griff, with Milo. These relationships are confusing, not clear-cut at all. I love that Bernard crafted this book not only into a thriller, but a novel that explored relationships and the "real" things of life.

I also really liked how Bernard crafted Wick psychologically. Wick really is damaged, but she doesn't want to see herself as that way. She doesn't want Griff or Lily or Bren to look at her as tainted or evil or damaged. She doesn't like being dependent on anyone, but she'd rather be dependent on Carson because at least he can protect the ones she loves. At least she can do the work he wants with ease. Supposedly.

The story has high stakes, danger, murder, threats, anguish. I was literally on the edge of my bed in some scenes, like when Wick was breaking into the judge's office, or when Baines was in the house with Wick and the neighbor intervened. Bernard really made my heart pound!

The romance... well, I'm not entirely sure what to say about the romance. At first, I thought this series was a duology. So I thought that the direction that the author took the romance was weird, and rushed. But then I saw that there will be another book, and all was right in the book.

So here's the thing: there is a sort-of love triangle in this book. BUT HOLD ON. I actually think it works in this case. Griff loves Wick, Wick loves Griff, but the thing is... them drifting apart, it totally feels natural, like it was supposed to happen. They are SO DIFFERENT. Griff does not understand. Don't get me wrong, I like him a lot, and I totally ship them... but I ship Wick and Milo more.

Nothing really romantic happens between Wick and Milo. But it's there. And honestly, I'm feeling that relationship more than Griff and Wick, at this point. I don't know what the author will do, and it won't be the end of the world either way (I like both boys, and I know that Wick doesn't know what she wants in general, so I don't really care).

When I read this book, I had no idea that there would be a book three. I went on Goodreads and saw an entry for a "Trust Me"... I'm really excited about this. The author ended the epilogue of this book very dramatically. I cannot wait!!

What I Did Not Like:

I mentioned that the beginning was boring - it really was though. I was thinking, darn, this is a tour book, I can't just set it aside until I'm in the mood. But the book god better as it went along. So, a word of caution. The story dragged a lot in the beginning - just keep going!

Would I Recommend It:

If you like high-stakes thrillers, then this series in general is definitely a good one! I'm glad I decided to join the tour for this book (I wasn't intending on doing so - I was completely content with just reading book one and moving on with life).

4 stars. I wasn't dying to read this book, but now that I've read it, I cannot wait to read book three!!

A GREAT series! And I'm glad it's just getting started!

Alright, y'all...there MUST be a third book in this series, because where this one left off?! I am feeling very unsettled! (Of course, I mean that in the best way!) *digs on goodreads* *finds next book will be available in a year* *sighs in relief*

If I thought that Find Me had me on the edge of my seat, and turning pages...it has NOTHING on Remember Me! Dirty cops, dirty judges, jealous boyfriends, new boys who understand you in a way no one else does...let's just say in the 24 hours it took me to read this, my mind was exploding over, and over, and over again. I didn't know what I wanted for Wicket. I mean, I love Griff. But I understand why she wonders if he will ever love her for exactly who she is, rather than what he wishes she would be. And Milo is totally adorable, in a schmexy, don't-know-if-he's-a-good-guy-or-bad-guy, kind of way. I felt so bad for her, and like I said before, even now, at the end of the novel, I'm not sure what I want for her...what should she do now? Who should she be with? Should she be with anybody?

And then there's FREAKING Carson...I've never really liked him, but I wanted to put him in a choke hold most of the novel. And really, he's not much better than the new bad guys in this story. And believe me, you won't see them coming. But I don't want to spoil any of the story for you, so I'll just leave it at that!

An intense, suspenseful sequel

Remember Me was an epic, intense and suspenseful read. My heart was in my throat for at least half of the book, if not more. I absolutely loved Find Me – it was one of my favorite reads of 2013! And to have the sequel surpass it in awesomeness? That’s impressive! I definitely didn’t notice any Second Book Syndrome in Remember Me!

Wick hasn’t changed much since Find Me, character-wise. I mean, she has new fears and nightmares from what happened at the end of Find Me and she’s been pulled in even deeper by Carson. But otherwise, she’s still skeptical of everything and everyone and completely untrusting. She’s still protective of Lily and wary of Bren and her affections. She’s still confused about how she feels about her dad, still misses her mom – and still keeps Griff at a metaphorical distance. But in Remember Me, Wick becomes very stubborn and slightly paranoid. She worked alone before Griff, but has since come to rely on him a lot. Yet she pushes him away in Remember Me, refusing to confide in him or ask for help. I really wanted to shake some sense into her at times!

As for Griff himself.. Griff frustrated me. I really loved him in Find Me, but he was very stubborn and childish and annoying in Remember Me. He should have been supporting Wick, not pushing her away or condemning her for her lifestyle. She had her reasons for doing the things she did and if he trusted and loved her as much as he claimed, he should have been more supportive or pushed to help more. And what he did in the end? It broke my heart, but you know what? Good riddance!

Now Milo.. Milo I liked! He was kind of odd in the beginning and his awe at meeting Wick was borderline creepy worship. But the more we get to know him – and the more he and Wick get to know each other – the more he grows on you. He’s loyal, smart and has the connections necessary for Wick to do what she needs to do. He’s almost like a male version of Wick. They get each other, they understand what’s at stake in their line of work and they work well together. I still don’t completely trust Milo yet, though..

The whole Carson story line was really starting to bug me. I think it was one of my biggest issues. I despise dirty cops and he was the lowest of the low, scum and a pain in the butt! I think, deep down, he thought what he was doing would help the greater good, but he sure went about it the wrong way. I think if he’d been nicer to Wick, they could have been an epic team. I’m not sure he deserved what happened to him in the end, though he really did deserve to get knocked down a few pegs. I guess we’ll see where his story goes in the third book – I have a feeling Carson is going to end up being the lesser of the two evils…

Bren and Lily really made me angry in this book. Like, I would have thrown it if I had the physical copy of the book. As it was, I was reading on my iPad and I figured throwing that wasn’t a good idea. But wow.. At one point, roughly half-way into the book, Bren said some things and I just… I flipped out. I wanted to punch her so badly, more than I’ve ever wanted to punch anyone in my life – real or fictional!!! I couldn’t believe the words coming out of her mouth! And Lily.. I know she’s young and she just wants a family and a normal life, but WICK IS YOUR SISTER! STOP TREATING HER LIKE CRAP, YOU LITTLE BRAT! I mean, really. The things she said to Wick were so cruel.. And Bren and Lily were two characters I REALLY loved in Find Me. So for them to do the things they did.. Honestly, what Bren said is unforgivable and I don’t know if there’s anything she can do that will redeem her.

I love Romily’s writing style and the unique voices she gives her characters. The plot was truly intriguing and incredibly suspenseful. It was a fast-paced read, too. I basically read it in three sittings. Each time I picked it up, I read a huge chunk of the story – I was so engrossed in it, I just didn’t want to put it down. I loved the revelations at the end and I loved the introduction of the new “bad guy,” plus the set-up for the third book – it was all very ominous and creepy! I also can’t wait for the third book!! I’m really excited to see how everything wraps up and how it all ends.

Romily Bernard is an amazing writer. She’s created an amazing world with incredible characters. The story sucks you in and refuses to let go. I’m excited for Trust Me (the third book in this trilogy), but I’m also excited to see what else Romily does in the future.

Overall, if it isn’t obvious already, I highly recommend this book, this series and this author! If you haven’t read Find Me yet, I suggest you do so ASAP! You’re missing out on an amazing read if you don’t!

A Good Introduction to Decision-Making about Risk and What Our Choices Tell Us about Ourselves

Oxford doesn't publish books for "dummies" -- they publish "very short introductions". And this one isn't for dummies. It's an informed overview of the elements of understanding risks and making decisions with respect to them.

For most of us, risk is something we address in an informal, rule-of-thumb manner. I think this goes for everything from the risks we run in leaving our homes every day (or even staying in them), to how we invest our 401ks, to our willingness or unwillingness to participate in dangerous sports like rock-climbing or ocean swimming, and even to business risks arising in our professional lives. We trust in our own decision-making, often with little information to go on.

We certainly pay a price. For example, if we rely on the flow of information we simply happen to receive, we over-estimate our vulnerability to violent crime, natural disasters, traffic accidents, and the like. Our information flow isn't designed as an unbiased source for risk assessment.

The authors have made careers of understanding risk. The most interesting point they make, I think, is that "societies reveal themselves by how they handle dangers." How we measure risks, including what it is that we consider risks to be risks to reveal, in action, what we value, what really matters to us. Is it life, simply put? Is it a life of a particular kind? Is it long life? Is it healthy life?

"Very short introductions" are not for professionals -- they are for the majority of us who can benefit from an explicit, reflective framework for something we don't really have an informed way of thinking about. Maybe the most valuable thing we can learn is that there are, in fact, informed ways to think about and make decisions with respect to the risks that are ubiquitous in everyday life.

Masterful overview of how different professions view risk

This is not about data and specific advice regarding the risks that you as an individual face in everyday life (for which see How Risky Is It, Really?: Why Our Fears Don't Always Match the Facts or The Norm Chronicles: Stories and Numbers About Danger). Instead it is a masterful overview of how many disciplines inside academia, and professions outside academia, think about Risk nowadays. Of books I have read (on any subject), it is one of the most successful at combining abstract high-level concepts with a set of substantial real-world examples. In style it is somewhat like a well-written concise textbook rather than a "popular science" book, so it requires some concentration rather than being easy bedtime reading. In the examples it presents data but does not seek to engage any details of statistical analysis.

Regarding content, I cannot do better than compress the author's own summary: thinking about risk in the context of decisions where risk matters; creating measures of risk; understanding probabilities of risks by combining historical records, science and expert judgement; how individuals move from understanding risks to making choices; risk perception and judgmental biases; risk communication; cultural aspects of risk.

Rather than plugging one author's view, the book emphasizes the many different aspects of risk and the complexity of real-world decision making. It strikes me as ideal for the reader who already has some familiarity with some aspect of the study of risk, but who is puzzled why other people view risk differently. Because many ideas are touched upon in a single paragraph (or sentence or phrase) it might be a bit overwhelming for a complete novice, but this is a book one could reread every few years and find something newly insightful.

A good brief overview

This is what the title promises. It offers a concise look at the nature of risk, risk analysis and risk communication. It's a good place to start with pointers to resources for digging deeper. One disappointing thing in reading the Kindle version is that the resolution of most images was poor.
