Review

A CHOICEOutstanding Academic Title, 2012

'In the second edition of The Phenomenological Mind, Gallagher and Zahavi offer a robust, exemplary account of how the phenomenological tradition (as developed by Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and others) stands as an important resource for research in contemporary philosophy of mind and cognitive science. ...Skillfully integrating textual analysis, empirical data, and phenomenological narrative, the authors offer compelling arguments that rupture disciplinary boundaries while inviting future dialogue... Summing Up: Highly recommended.' - CHOICE

Praise for the first edition:

'Though Gallagher and Zahavi call their book an introduction, it is far more than an introduction. It is the most comprehensive work on what phenomenology has to say about cognition and consciousness and how it relates to the scientific study of cognition to date.'– Abstracta

'…upper level philosophy students, postgraduates, and anyone interested in a non-computational, non-reductive, scientifically informed view of the mind will find it, I am sure, extremely helpful and illuminating. … both phenomenologists and cognitive scientists can profit from this excellent and timely treatment.' - Mind

'Offering a fresh new approach, this clear and accessible book shows the relevance of phenomenology to contemporary investigations of the mind and brain. It will be useful for students and scholars alike in the cognitive sciences who wish to gain a better understanding of Phenomenology and its relevance to their research.'– Evan Thompson, University of Toronto, Canada

'This excellent and much-needed book offers the first comprehensive introduction to phenomenological philosophy of mind. Written by two internationally renowned contributors to this exciting and fast-growing interdisciplinary field, it will be an indispensable resource for students and researchers alike.'– Matthew Ratcliffe, Durham University, UK

'Co-authored by two of the most prominent and respected contributors to the field, this is an outstanding book, and a very welcome and much-needed addition to the literature.'– Daniel Hutto, University of Hertfordshire, UK

'This is an absolutely indispensable book for anyone interested in the contemporary study of the mind. It provides clear summaries of the leading theoretical positions and the required orientation for understanding current debates. It is a fresh, lively and highly accessible text that will engage students and bring them up to speed very quickly. In short, a superb and much needed book.'- Barry C. A good introduction
By B. Hansberry
Although the language is a little advanced for anyone unfamiliar with analytic philosophy, this book is an accessible introduction to phenomenology from the perspective of analytic philosophy of mind. It presents new issues by reformatting valuable phenomenological ideas in terms that are easy for an analytical philosopher to understand and work with. I am working on a thesis project on phenomenology and I am an analytical philosopher, I found this book extremely helpful.

Introduction to the next Psychology
By Diego H Padilla
Being a psychologist, I think that all about "mental" it's moving toward a more complex interdisciplinary science what put to dialogue many other areas of knowledge like neurosciences, antropology, sociology and especially phenomenological science.
Gallagher and Zahavi with their particular humor explain concisely, clear and orderly all the themes especified in the description of the item, defending the contribution of the phenomenology to the debate about mind

Love, Africa: A Memoir of Romance, War, and Survival, by Jeffrey Gettleman

From Jeffrey Gettleman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist, comes a passionate, revealing story about finding love and finding a calling, set against one of the most turbulent regions in the world.

A seasoned war correspondent, Jeffrey Gettleman has covered every major conflict over the past twenty years, from Afghanistan to Iraq to the Congo. For the past decade, he has served as the East Africa bureau chief for the New York Times, fulfilling a teenage dream.

At nineteen, Gettleman fell in love, twice. On a do-it-yourself community service trip in college, he went to East Africa—a terrifying, exciting, dreamlike part of the world in the throes of change that imprinted itself on his imagination and on his heart.

But around that same time he also fell in love with a fellow Cornell student—the brightest, classiest, most principled woman he’d ever met. To say they were opposites was an understatement. She became a criminal lawyer in America; he hungered to return to Africa. For the next decade he would be torn between these two abiding passions.

A sensually rendered coming-of-age story in the tradition of Barbarian Days, Love, Africa is a tale of passion, violence, far-flung adventure, tortuous long-distance relationships, screwing up, forgiveness, parenthood, and happiness that explores the power of finding yourself in the most unexpected of places.

Review
“A passionate debut memoir bears witness to political turmoil… A stark, eye-opening, and sometimes horrifying portrait by a reporter enthralled by the ‘power and magic’ of Africa.” (Kirkus)

“[Gettleman’s] beautifully written memoir is about many kinds of love…The path to love is not always straight, but when Gettleman discovers his true passions, he grabs hold and doesn’t let go. Love, Africa offers a key to understanding humankind’s past and future and a key to understanding our hearts.” (Sheryl Sandberg)

“Rarely do you read such beautifully rendered honesty: witness the eyes and heart of Jeffrey transform into a remarkable person and writer for our time.” (Ishmael Beah)

“Gettleman’s memoir of his life, his love, and the excitement and perils of journalism is a page-turner. The portrait of Africa that emerges is disturbing, tender, and harsh. …. A tremendous read. I couldn’t put it down.” (Abraham Verghese)

“Jeffrey Gettleman’s memoir is truly, in all its complicated tragic beauty, a love story made up itself of inextricably intertwined love stories. I was mesmerized.” (Alexandra Fuller)

“To feel the fear, sinfulness, and rapture of being a foreign correspondent, read this book! Using self-lacerating truth and high velocity prose, Jeffrey Gettleman has written a compulsively readable new story about what it means to be ‘our man in Africa.’” (Blaine Harden)

“Jeffrey Gettleman has true grit. That’s why he was in my book, and why you have to read his.’’ (Angela Duckworth)

“…[Gettleman] takes readers... into the most terrifying and beguiling continent in the world.…Gettleman is a rare combination of dogged reporter and very fine writer…I kept catching myself wondering whether it was too late to go back and lead his life rather than my own .” (Sebastian Junger)

“[An] exciting, harrowing memoir that aptly displays why [Gettleman’s] a Pulitzer Prize winner and a New York Times bureau chief…. there’s a thrilling immediacy and attention to detail in Gettleman’s writing that puts the reader right beside him…Gettleman’s memoir is an absolute must-read.” (Booklist (starred review))

Intoxicating, enviable, remarkable
By John Jeter
Jeffrey Gettleman's book just arrived in the mail. Ripped the box open, ripped into reading. Had to stop for just a few minutes to scratch out a review. One doesn't need to finish reading a book as masterful, rich, and epic as this one is to share its beauty.
Weaving his yearning for rootlessness while in a beguiling and dangerous continent together with his yearning for rootedness while in the beguiling (and dangerous) landscape of love and marriage, Mr. Gettleman delivers a tour de force with prose that's thought-provoking here and sly and playful there -- a package that delivers what it means to be torn together and redeemed by both desires at the same time.

I wanted to be Jeffrey Gettleman. Still do, though it's too late. When I was much younger, I dreamed of writing for Page 2 of The New York Times. That was way back when Page 2 was dedicated to a derring-do story from a mythical correspondent, back when Russell Baker was a columnist at the Gray Lady. (I couldn't ever aspire to be a Russell Baker.) For too many reasons (health), I couldn't follow that dream.

Thanks to Love, Africa, I get to wallow in Mr. Gettleman's portrayal of his own life, and while I feel joy in the sharing, I admit to feeling selfish unease -- that kind you experience in high school about that kid who's way too good-looking, way too talented, way too successful, way too immersed in a life of his own design.

This book won't make you feel like that, unless you're me. Rather, This book will make you fall in love with love and with a place you've likely never been and likely wouldn't want to go. This book accomplishes all of that with words that take you to all those places -- inside of yourself and outside -- like a witchdoctor's magical potion.

Sip slowly of Mr. Gettlleman's Love, Africa's to savor its lingering intoxication.

Sincerely a wonderful book.
By Gabrielle Brooks
Cannot put it down.
I made my own visit to Africa with my family 2 years ago and reading his book has put words to feelings I had while in the smaller countries.
His writing is beautiful- memorable, eye-opening, sad, informational, and sincere.
He mixes in his American life and love for a woman with his love of this complicated continent in such an honest and introspective manner.

By Amazon Customer
Took me all of a few days to finish. The world would be in better shape if more people read Gettleman and better understood the regions he has covered. Like all gripping love stories, it is inspiring, eye-opening, insightful and intermittently gut-wrenching.

Many Great Ideas To Keep You Busy
By Beast Of Bodmin
Not for the beginner. The effort you put in to master the techniques described in the book will surely pay off. One of the aims of the book is to present techniques for every trading style, which aim I think is acheived.

I am a subscriber to Samir Elias's "Generate Thousands" service, and it was because of the success I have had that I bought the third edition of his first book "Generate Thousands ...". As a result of being a member I was invited to buy "Explosive Stock Trading Strategies" early and at a discount, which I did. And not because of the discount!

I completed my first reading this morning and I was hoping to be the first to submit a review but I was beaten to it.

If you have read "Generate Thousands ..." you'll recognise the writing style and the book's layout. The object of the book is to be a standalone piece, so there are two Appendices from "Generate Thousands ...", and also sections are quoted from this book when appropriate. Other than that, there is little overlap. For one thing, options are not mentioned at all.

Hopefully some of the sections that I found quite dense the first time through will reveal themselves to me the next time through. On the other hand, maybe the sections I found opaque or slow might have been due to my personality rather than the content. i.e. not suited to my trading style.

For me, the most memorable sections were Chapter 11's "How to catch a falling knife" and the fundamental analysis-based RESHE system in Chapter 12. I hope that this is not because they were the last ones I read! The former because it seems easy to programme into a scanning system, the latter because I am still a relative newcomer to trading (certainly measured by my success) and my first revelation was reading Phil Town's "Rule #1" investing system, which relies heavily on fundamental analysis.

Now to why I give if four stars and not five. As with "Generate Thousands ...", often the positioning of charts and data tables relative to the text means a lot of flicking back and forth which I found could disturb my concentration. The labelling of the charts meant I had to sometimes look hard to find each label. Finally it was sometimes difficult to know which day a label referred to, although I suspect with greater understanding this would become obvious. I also think the use of call-out boxes and/ or different font sizes would help improve the presentation.

If the book were available as a bookmarkable PDF, my first criticism could be mitigated by opening the document twice and using one open copy to look at a chart while reading the associated text.

If there is to be a second edition, I would like to suggest that each chapter have a sort of "you will need ..." summary in which the technical indicators used is listed and maybe the type of trader it is aimed at and the trading time frames.

Explosive and creative setups for every trading style
By Jerome I.
I've read Dr Elias' first book, which is fantastic : there's a first part on managing long term stock positions with short options, and a second part on short-term trading. The quality of the information in this first book has encouraged me to buy this second book "Explosive Stock Trading Strategies", which is quite different from the first : no options, just stocks.

The author, who runs local trade groups, has observed that trading success comes when a person trades a system which is matched with his(her) personality.
I'll take my own example : I've tried hard to follow the "long-term" stock+option strategies described in his first book, but I just can't ! If I loose $2 on the stock, but make $0.50 on an short option, I still loose $1.50 on the global position : I can of course sell more options the following months, keep the stock, until break even and profit, BUT, it makes me feel very frustrated, and psychologically, I'm not "in the zone" anymore and make bad decisions (I think "this stock is due for a bounce and will rebound", so I stay with it... but it continues to plunge ; or I think "it will never move up" and I sell right at the bottom of the correction, etc ...). Ironically, when I "trend-trade", I'm much more relaxed and I do not take bad, hasty decisions.
So : even if a system is robust and works, if you psychologically can't trade it, you'll loose money (at least : I've lost money).

There are lots of "personality traits" that the author has observed : for example, some people won't be comfortable buying a stock that is not sound fundamentally, some prefer trading bar charts, some prefer chart patterns, some rely on indicators, some prefer long-term trades, some prefer bar chart patterns, some prefer trading breakouts, while still others trade falling knives, etc ...

What is offered here is a bunch of trading setups, designed to fit almost each trader's personality. I've read a lot of trading books, but what I have found in this one is 100% original : you combine the Mass Index with the Money Flow Index to predict breakouts, you use the channel between an ADX and an MACD on percentage change to catch reversals, you use both triple stochastics and MACD divergence to predict trend change, etc ...

I am quite convinced that every reader will find a setup that matches his style.
Furthermore, the setups have the potential to deliver substantial profits ... check the generatethousands.com site for the track record of the author if you need to be convinced.

And there's more : for almost each entry, the author also explains how to exit, so that you can manage your trade from the beginning to the end.

I'm still in the process of testing the ideas : some work better on some stocks than others, but this book contains so much information, and so much creative combinations that you sincerely can't go wrong with it.

My main criticism : the author has not provided the scanning software(s) he uses to find his trading candidates ... I'm still looking for a way to scan stocks on fundamental criteria such as retained earnings ... :o( (please leave me a comment if you know how to do it !)

To conclude, it is an excellent book, highly recommended : Dr. Samir Elias opens new doors with his book - A true five stars.

Explosive Stock-Elias
By DRH
The best stock trading book there is. It changed my trading. I had purchased his book on options-also the best. I had a 20 year collection of books and workbooks on stocks and options, what I didn't sell in an auction, I gave away with the exception of John Murphy's Tecnical Analysis. Been to expensive seminars, purchased all kinds of software, subscribed to newsletters, been a member of live trading rooms, etc., etc. wasted a bunch of money. Dr. Samir Elias is not just the author of another book on the stock market; HE IS A GENIUS! Don't know Dr. Elias, never been to his website, never spoke to him, never e-mailed him or communicated with him. Just a little quy trying to make a little money. Must admit after reading 2 or 3 chapters, however, I thought I had wasted my money but after reading several more chapters, I could not put the book down and I was on vacation at a beautiful beach. I wish I had found his trading methods 20 years ago. A BIG THANKS to him---Randy

Amazon.com Review
There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender. Odd Girl Out begins with the premise that girls are socialized to be sweet with a double bind: they must value friendships; but they must not express the anger that might destroy them. Lacking cultural permission to acknowledge conflict, girls develop what Simmons calls "a hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression."

The author, who visited 30 schools and talked to 300 girls, catalogues chilling and heartbreaking acts of aggression, including the silent treatment, note-passing, glaring, gossiping, ganging up, fashion police, and being nice in private/mean in public. She decodes the vocabulary of these sneak attacks, explaining, for example, three ways to parse the meaning of "I'm fat."

Simmons is a gifted writer who is skilled at describing destructive patterns and prescribing clear-cut strategies for parents, teachers, and girls to resist them. "The heart of resistance is truth telling," advises Simmons. She guides readers to nurture emotional honesty in girls and to discover a language for public discussions of bullying. She offers innovative ideas for changing the dynamics of the classroom, sample dialogues for talking to daughters, and exercises for girls and their friends to explore and resolve messy feelings and conflicts head-on.

One intriguing chapter contrasts truth telling in white middle class, African-American, Latino, and working-class communities. Odd Girl Out is that rare book with the power to touch individual lives and transform the culture that constrains girls--and boys--from speaking the truth. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
Although more than 16 years have passed, Rhodes Scholar Simmons hasn't forgotten how she felt when Abby told the other girls in third grade not to play with her, nor has she stopped thinking about her own role in giving Noa the silent treatment. Simmons examines how such "alternative aggression" where girls use their relationship with the victim as a weapon flourishes and its harmful effects. Through interviews with more than 300 girls in 10 schools (in two urban areas and a small town), as well as 50 women who experienced alternative aggression when they were young, Simmons offers a detailed portrait of girls' bullying. Citing the work of Carol Gilligan and Lyn Mikel Brown, she shows the toll that alternative aggression can take on girls' self-esteem. For Simmons, the restraints that society imposes to prevent girls from venting feelings of competition, jealousy and anger is largely to blame for this type of bullying. It forces girls to turn their lives into "a perverse game of Twister," where their only outlets for expressing negative feelings are covert looks, turned backs and whispers. Since the events at Columbine, some schools have taken steps to curb relational aggression. For those that haven't, Simmons makes an impassioned plea that no form of bullying be permitted.

From Booklist
Forget the stereotypes of sugar and spice. Girls are mean, and as this books and a recent New York Times Magazine cover storyindicate, their subtle, insidious style of bullying is rapidlygarnering attention and concern. Simmons, a twentysomething with apolitical background, calls on her extensive face-to-face researchwith teens in this book that exposes the social minefields of femaleadolescence and the deep scarring that can result. Bolstered withnumerous revealing anecdotes and quotes, Odd Girl Out does anexcellent job of articulating to adults exactly the pain and subtlewarfare that many teen girls experience, and Simmons offers thoughtfulmotivations for both bullies and the parents who are reluctant to reinthem in. She also offers admirable, groundbreaking insight into anall-too-common issue and will be invaluable to any adult struggling tohelp a girl get through her teens. Informative and enlightening
By Shelleyrae
I read the first edition of Odd Girl Out about five years ago when my oldest daughter was in grade 4/5 and there were some real problems regarding bullying and power struggles amongst the girls in her year. While my daughter was not a direct target, nor a bully, it was a stressful time for her as two girls in particular aggressively manipulated the social hierarchy, girls switched alliances almost daily and the school seemed at a complete loss at how to deal with it. To help my daughter cope with the upheaval I read a number of books on the subject including Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls and Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence, both of which I also would recommend to parents and educators of girls.
I chose to read this revised edition because my oldest daughter is now fifteen and as an avid (ie constant) user of Facebook, MSN and various online social communities. Additionally my youngest daughter is now eight and an awareness of online social communities is beginning to creep into her consciousness. As such I was particularly interested in Simmons inclusion of the dynamics of cyber-bullying and how I might be able to help my daughters navigate this social arena.
The strength of Odd Girl Out is that it illustrates the experience of female bullying in a personal manner, with girls sharing their circumstances in their own words. I, like most women, recognised many of the methods girls use to control their social world. With hindsight, the daily drama of school seem mostly petty and irrelevant but I do still remember the intensity of the emotion that surrounded playground machinations - the agony of being dumped by a best friend, the desire to be popular, and like most I have been both a victim and perpetrator (though largely an unwitting one)of the type of bullying and aggression Simmons examines. Odd Girl Out is a reminder of the seriousness with which girls interact with their peers.
The new chapter that addresses cyber bullying/drama is interesting and I think is full of useful information, especially for parents who are not familiar with technology. I am a net-savvy parent who uses social media and have discussed the issues with my daughter but I know she doesn't see the consequences of a casual status update or online flirting the same way as I do, which is highlighted by the stories shared in this chapter. Later on in the book, Simmons discusses strategies for managing media in the lives of girls in practical ways, this chapter is particularly useful and as I am trying to walk the line between keeping an eye on my teenager's online activities without invading her social privacy too much, I found it informative and encouraging.
The focus of Odd Girl Out tends to be on girls aged 11-13 and in particular those whose experiences are at the extremes of the issue but nevertheless I think it has relevance for those involved in any setting where girls aged 8 to 16 interact. Simmons grounds the research, giving the experiences of young girls, and the lasting effects, credibility and for a parent (or educator) I think it can provide a vocabulary for discussion and investigation.

found it wanting
By J. Heller
I decided to read this book because I thought it might help me deal with the issues my daughter is starting to face in elementary school. I saw myself in this book -I distinctly recall when my "best friend" in 4th grade cornered me in the girls bathroom and told me I better stop being a brat otherwise she wouldn't be my friend anymore. I was lost and bewildered, like many of the victims in this book, and I couldn't figure out what I did to earn her wrath. Years later I know I did nothing but the pain from that moment is still there and the pain inflicted through middle and high school by various girls is not far from the surface. Reading this book made me realize why I have trouble making friends and why I just don't "put myself out there". I've been shot down way too many times.

BUT while this book did shed some light on what happened to me and put into words what girls do to each other I didn't find what I was hoping for; some type of blueprint, some sort of plan for me to help my daughter through this. The author kept saying that we needed to come up with a new language to explain girl bullying but she never came up it. Nor did I find anything to help explain things to my daughter. She did end the book with some words of advice on how to talk to your daughter about what may be happening to her but all this book did was take her countless interviews with girls and women and prove that girls just aren't that nice.

A very important book
By Elizabeth Chivers
This book resonated with me on so many levels: as a girl who dealt with alternate aggressions, as a teacher of young girls, a a stepmother of an adolescent, and as an aunt. Although at times redundant and lengthy in its retelling of countless interviews, this book is a great read for anyone who has a young girl in their life.

Helmet for My Pillow: From Parris Island to the Pacific, by Robert Leckie

Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts ever to come out of World War II. Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war’s fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war, painting an unvarnished portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and often die in the defense of their country.

From the live-for-today rowdiness of marines on leave to the terrors of jungle warfare against an enemy determined to fight to the last man, Leckie describes what war is really like when victory can only be measured inch by bloody inch. Woven throughout are Leckie’s hard-won, eloquent, and thoroughly unsentimental meditations on the meaning of war and why we fight. Unparalleled in its immediacy and accuracy, Helmet for My Pillow will leave no reader untouched. This is a book that brings you as close to the mud, the blood, and the experience of war as it is safe to come.

Now producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman, the men behind Band of Brothers, have adapted material from Helmet for My Pillow for HBO’s epic miniseries The Pacific, which will thrill and edify a whole new generation.

“One hell of a book! The real stuff that proves the U.S. Marines are the greatest fighting men on earth!”—Leon Uris, author of Battle Cry

Chapter One

Boot

A cutting wind slanted up Church Street in the cheerless dawn of January 5, 1942. That day I departed for the United States Marines.

The war with Japan was not yet four weeks old, Wake Island had fallen. Pearl Harbor was a real tragedy, a burning bitter humiliation. Hastily composed war songs were on the lips of everyone, their heavy patriotism failing to compensate for what they lacked in tune and spirit. Hysteria seemed to crouch behind all eyes.

But none of this meant much to me. I was aware of my father beside me, bending into the wind with me. I could feel the wound in my lower regions, still fresh, still sore. The sutures had been removed a few days earlier.

I had sought to enlist the day after Pearl Harbor, but the Marines had insisted that I be circumcised. It cost me a hundred dollars, although I am not sure to this day whether I paid the doctor or not. But I am certain that few young men went off to war in that fateful time so marked.

We had come across the Jersey meadows, riding the Erie commuter line, and then on the ferry over the Hudson River to downtown New York. Breakfast at home had been subdued. My mother was up and about; she did not cry. It was not a heart-rending leave-taking, nor was it brave, resolute—any of those words that fail to describe the thing.

It was like so much else in this war that was to produce unbounded heroism, yet not a single stirring song: it was resigned. She followed me to the door with sad eyes and said, “God keep you.”

It had been a silent trip across the meadows and it was a wordless good-by in front of the bronze revolving doors at Ninety, Church Street. My father embraced me quickly, and just as quickly averted his face and left. The Irish doorman measured me and smiled.

I went inside and joined the United States Marines.

The captain who swore us in reduced the ceremony to a jumble. We all held up our hands. We put them down when he lowered his. That way we guessed we were marines.

The master gunnery sergeant who became our momentary shepherd made the fact plainer to us. Those rich mellow blasphemous oaths that were to become so familiar to me flowed from his lips with the consummate ease of one who had spent a lifetime in vituperation. I would meet his masters later. Presently, as he herded us across the river to Hoboken and a waiting train, he seemed to be beyond comparison. But he was gentle and kind enough when he said good-by to the thirty or forty of us who boarded the train.

He stood at the head of our railroad car—a man of middle age, slender, and of a grace that was on the verge of being ruined by a pot belly. He wore the Marine dress blues. Over this was the regulation tight-fitting overcoat of forest green. Green and blue has always seemed to me an odd combination of colors, and it seemed especially so then; the gaudy dark and light blue of the Marine dress sheathed in sedate and soothing green.

“Where you are going it will not be easy,” the gunnery sergeant said. “When you get to Parris Island, you’ll find things plenty different from civilian life. You won’t like it! You’ll think they’re overdoing things. You’ll think they’re stupid! You’ll think they’re the cruelest, rottenest bunch of men you ever ran into! I’m going to tell you one thing. You’ll be wrong! If you want to save yourself plenty of heartache you’ll listen to me right now: you’ll do everything they tell you and you’ll keep your big mouths shut!”

He could not help grinning at the end. No group of men ever had a saner counselor, and he knew it; but he could not help grinning. He knew we would ignore his every word.

“Okay, Sarge,” somebody yelled. “Thanks, Sarge.”

He turned and left us.

We called him “Sarge.” Within another twenty-four hours we would not dare address a lowly Pfc. without the cringing “sir.” But today the civilian shine was still upon us. We wore civvies; Hoboken howled around us in the throes of trade; we each had the citizen’s polite deprecation of the soldier, and who among us was not certain that he was not long for the ranks?

Our ride to Washington was silent and uneventful. But once we had arrived in the capital and had changed trains the atmosphere seemed to lift. Other Marine recruits were arriving from all over the east. Our contingent was the last to arrive, the last to be crammed aboard the ancient wooden train that waited, puffing, dirty-in-the-dark, smelling of coal—waited to take us down the coast to South Carolina. Perhaps it was because of the dilapidated old train that we brightened and became gay. Such a dingy, tired old relic could not help but provoke mirth. Someone pretended to have found a brass plate beneath one of the seats, and our car rocked with laughter as he read, “This car is the property of the Philadelphia Museum of American History.” We had light from kerosene lamps and heat from a potbellied stove. Draughts seemed to stream from every angle and there was a constant creaking and wailing of wood and wheels that sounded like an endless keening. Strange old train that it was, I loved it.

Comfort had been left behind in Washington. Some of us already were beginning to revel in the hardship of the train ride. That intangible mystique of the marine was somehow, even then, at work. We were having it rough, which is exactly what we expected and what we had signed up for. That is the thing: having it rough. The man who has had it roughest is the man to be most admired. Conversely, he who has had it the easiest is the least praiseworthy.

Those who wished to sleep could cat-nap on the floor while the train lurched down through Virginia and North Carolina. But these were few. The singing and the talk were too exciting.

The boy sitting next to me—a handsome blond-haired youth from south Jersey—turned out to have a fine high voice. He sang several songs alone. There being a liberal leavening of New York Irish among us, he was soon singing Irish ballads.

Across the aisle there was another boy, whom I shall call Armadillo because of his lean and pointed face. He was from New York and had attended college there. Being one of the few college men present, he had already established a sort of literary clique.

The Armadillo’s coterie could not equal another circle farther down the car. This had at its center a stocky, smiling redhead. Red had been a catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals and had once hit a home run at the Polo Grounds off the great Carl Hubbell.

There was no measuring the impact of such a celebrity on our group, composed otherwise of mediocrities like myself. Red had been in the big time. He had held daily converse with men who were nothing less than the idols of his newfound comrades. It was quite natural they should ring him round; consult him on everything from pitching form to the Japanese General Staff.

“Whaddya think it’ll be like at Parris Island, Red?”

“Hey, Red—you think the Japs are as tough as the newspapers say they are?”

It is an American weakness. The success becomes the sage. Scientists counsel on civil liberty; comedians and actresses lead political rallies; athletes tell us what brand of cigarette to smoke. But the redhead was equal to it. It was plain in his case what travel and headlines can do. He was easily the most poised of us all.

But I suspect even Red’s savoir-faire got a rude jolt when we arrived in Parris Island. We had been taken from the railroad station by truck. When we had dismounted and had formed a motley rank in front of the red brick mess hall, we were subjected to the classic greeting.

“Boys,” said the sergeant who would be our drill instructor. “Boys—Ah want to tell yawl something. Give youah hearts to Jesus, boys—cause youah ass belongs to me!”

Then he fell us in after our clumsy civilian fashion and marched us into the mess hall.

There were baloney and lima beans. I had never eaten lima beans before, but I did this time; they were cold.

The group that had made the trip from New York did not survive the first day in Parris Island. I never saw the blond singer again, nor most of the others. Somehow sixty of us among the hundreds who had been aboard that ancient train, became a training platoon, were assigned a number and placed under the charge of the drill sergeant who had delivered the welcoming address.

Sergeant Bellow was a southerner with a fine contempt for northerners. It was not that he favored the southerners; he merely treated them less sarcastically. He was big. I would say six feet four inches, two hundred thirty pounds.

But above all he had a voice.

It pulsed with power as he counted the cadence, marching us from the administration building to the quartermaster’s. It whipped us, this ragged remnant, and stiffened our slouching civilian backs. Nowhere else but in the Marine Corps do you hear that peculiar lilting cadence of command.

“Thrip-faw-ya-leahft, thrip-faw-ya-leahft.”

It sounds like an incantation; but it is merely the traditional “three-four-your-left” elongated by the southern drawl, made sprightly by being sung. I never heard it done better than by our sergeant. Because of this, and because of his inordinate love of drill, I have but one image of him: striding stiff-backed a few feet apart from us, arms thrust out, hands clenched, head canted back, with the whole body following and the great voice ceaselessly bellowing, “Thrip-faw-ya-leahft, thrip-faw-ya-leahft.”

Sergeant Bellow marched us to the quartermaster’s. It was there we were stripped of all vestiges of personality. It is the quartermasters who make soldiers, sailors and marines. In their presence, one strips down. With each divestment, a trait is lost; the discard of a garment marks the quiet death of an idiosyncrasy. I take off my socks; gone is a propensity for stripes, or clocks, or checks, or even solids; ended is a tendency to combine purple socks with brown tie. My socks henceforth will be tan. They will neither be soiled, nor rolled, nor gaudy, nor restrained, nor holey. They will be tan. The only other thing they may be is clean.

So it is with it all, until one stands naked, struggling with an embarrassment that is entirely lost on the laconic shades who work in quartermaster sheds.

Within—in the depths the psychiatrists call subliminal—a human spark still sputters. It will never go quite out. Its vigor or its desuetude is in exact proportion to the number of miles a man may put between himself and his camp.

Profound and unique insight into the WWII Pacific experience
By Lori D. Smith
First, I must admit a particular regard for this book as the granddaughter of Bill Smith (whom Leckie refers to as 'Hoosier'), who served with Leckie in How Company. Leckie offers nuanced insight into the ways in which he and his friends understood national military service, the `enemy', and the war more generally, and how these perspectives or ideas evolved among the men from North Carolina to Guadalcanal, Australia, and New Britain. Leckie steers clear from prototypes or cliches; there is no enblematic enlisted man or officer. Rather, these men are treated as real people coping (or not) with the profound uncertainty of their situation.

Perhaps this appreciation says more about my own lack of experience with combat/warfare. Thinking of Guadalcanal from a macro or military history perspective, it is easy to take for granted that marines' objectives - and the most efficacious means to pursue them - were always apparent to those involved. In this context, Leckie's account of warfare as a learning process was deep, reflexive, and fascinating. For example, he describes: 1) the marines' first reactions to air battle and subsequent adjustment to air battle as a simple process of attrition; and 2) the uncertainty confronted by officers at various stages, against the backdrop of the US' limited military experience in the Pacific or in jungles more generally. In this way, Leckie also makes apparent the need - and efficacy - of severe hierarchy. For this reason, I think that reviewers' arguments positing a lack of regard for officers deserve qualification.

***UPDATE/REFLECTIONS***
Hoosier was wounded and evacuated early in the Battle of Peleliu; I believe that Chuckler and Runner were wounded later and evacuated with Leckie. Leckie and his friends stayed in touch - in the summer of 1985, my grandfather and his wife, as well as Runner (Juergens) and his wife, went to visit Leckie in New Jersey. There Leckie decidated a park in their honor, in honor of all marines who fought in the Pacific Theater (I uploaded a photo of the dedication plaque in the 'customer image gallery').

Although Hoosier never liked to share his experiences from the war, my father considers the book to be true to his character. And, while the HBO miniseries diverges considerably from the book, Hoosier's sense of humor appears true to form (the book provides far greater nuance and depth, different dialogue, and events unfolded differently). This edition of the book also includes a few photographs of Leckie, Runner, Hoosier, and others - some taken in their dress blues, and others on Guadalcanal.

That was victory
By wogan
`Helmet for My Pillow" is a reissue from 1957. My one and only complaint is my usual one with reissues...please put in an updated introduction...tell us what has happened with the author or life, don't just reissue it and do nothing else. This will be made into a mini series which is probably the reason for the reissue. No matter what the reason it's definitely worth reading. Robert Leckie's descriptions create a picture; from his drill sergeant..." but above all he had a voice" to the exultation of leave in Australian after the battle of Guadalcanal. There are black and white pictures throughout the pages of the men he served with and of Leckie which definitely helps with the mind's pictures.

But most of all this book is remarkable. I have heard men describe their experiences with jungle warfare, both from WWII and Vietnam, but never with the awful clarity that is done in these pages. I grew up in the army and have been with the military all of my life and can agree with so much of what is said here, and said with far more ability than almost any other book I have read.
Leakie pulls no punches, not in the way many of the enlisted were treated by their officers or in his own `mistakes' that landed in him the brig.
Historically there is much in here that I have never read before, and I have read and listened to much. There are stories of the hunger the fighting men felt during battle and how Japanese forces would try to sneak into their camps at night for food. Then there are the descriptions of the `widow makers', trees that were weakened by artillery fire that killed 25 men as they broke and fell on them.
This is truly an incredible account, eye opening and worthy of your time and effort to read.

Absolutely spellbinding. Couldn't put it down.
By R. KELSEY
One of the best personal memoirs of war I have ever read. Leckie is brutally honest about anything and everything to do with his experiences in the 1st Marine Division during WWII. Incredibly impressed by his sensitive candor and philosophical reflections on the impact of war on human beings. Having been an officer myself, I was truly shocked to read his descriptions of Marine officers blatantly stealing from enlisted men. I guess in wartime, they were willing to let anyone become an officer. Leckie pulls no punches but shows remarkable understanding, forgiveness, and mercy towards all his comrades and even the enemy. This book is a classic and a must-read for anyone interested in what combat in the Pacific theater was really like and about young men's reaction to war. Rest in peace, Robert Leckie. For those who fell, there is no hell. I thank God knowing you have been reunited with your comrades. Thank you for writing this book. It was a privilege to have read it. A great gift to those who have never known the horrors and sacrifice of war.
