About the Author

Allan Megill is professor of history at the University of Virginia. He is the author of Prophets of Extremity:Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault, Derrida and Karl Marx: The Burden of Reason (Why Marx Rejected Politics and the Market), and editor of Rethinking Objectivity.

An Important Book on an Important Subject

I am very surprised to see that I am the first to review this important book, 9 years after its appearance. The book is a collection of several separately-published or separately-delivered pieces, but they have been revised considerably for this volume. The author’s goal is to discuss the epistemology of historiography. What can we learn and communicate? How ‘objective’ is our knowledge? What can be reclaimed from the past and what is lost forever? So-called grand narratives are now deemed unattainable; the focus is on so-called cultural history. What kind of narratives are, in fact, possible? And what are the limits of cultural history?

The author’s specific goal is quite clear. He is attempting to counter the hegemony of Foucault, today’s default position, because while Foucault was brilliant and original his “insistence that knowledge is nothing but a manifestation of power is a simplifying and ultimately very dangerous claim” (p. 13). His own view is that history should not be a mode of propaganda and cheerleading. The “true historian’s devotion [is] to letting the chips fall where they may” (p. 14). Rather than try to cheer the traditionalists or chasten the true Foucauldian believers he writes “for the as yet uninitiated, as an introduction to the issues that are at stake” (p. 14).

What follows are ten, detailed chapters. They are fairly complex. Some are quite abstract, so abstract in fact that he suggests that the reader may wish to read them out of order, to make the task a smoother and easier one. Subjects include the relationship between history and memory, the cognitive value of narrative, the multiple tasks of history writing, the importance of counterfactual history, coherence and incoherence in historiography and the plight of ‘grand narrative’ in the face of postmodern challenge. There is a very interesting case study in historical epistemology: “What Did the Neighbors Know about Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings?” (chapter six).

The book is always trenchant and never dull but it does, at points, become extremely abstract, with relatively few historical examples offered. It is longer than it appears. The 215+ pp. of text are styled in such a way that we are actually reading what would normally be closer to 300 pp. of text. There are 50 pp. of detailed notes.

I applaud the author’s purposes and I enjoyed the book, though it is a more difficult read than his well-known book Prophets of Extremity: Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault, Derrida.

About the Author
Rachel Doležal holds an MFA from Howard University. Her scholarly research focus is the intersection of race, gender, and class in the contemporary Black diaspora, with a specific emphasis on Black women in visual culture. She is a licensed Intercultural Competency & Diversity Trainer, dedicated to racial and social justice activism. She has worked as an instructor at North Idaho College and Eastern Washington University, where she also served as Advisor for the schools’ Black Student Unions, as well as Whitworth University, and has guest lectured at Spokane Community College, University of Idaho, Gonzaga University, and Washington State University.

Doležal began her activism in Mississippi, where she advocated for equal rights and partnered with community developers, tutoring grade-school children in Black history and art and pioneering African American history courses at a predominantly white university. She is the former Director of Education at the Human Rights Education Institute in Idaho and has served as a consultant for human rights education and inclusivity in regional public schools. She recently led the Office of Police Ombudsman Commission to promote police accountability and justice in law enforcement in Spokane, Washington, and was the President of the Spokane Chapter of the NAACP. She is the devoted mother of three sons.

This is book does not belong under sociology.

As long as you are reading this to get her side of the story and not for any deeper meaning, its a so-so book. It does have some black history peppered through it, but nothing beyond what I learned in an American History class in college.

While I do sympathize with her evangelical upbringing, it is not the same experience as what poc go through in their lives. Dolezal is missing the duel awareness that W.E.B DuBois speaks of along with the inability to escape the either/or thinking associated with those raised evangelical. She seems to have constructed this identity to avoid dealing with her white guilt. This is exhibited by the opportunities she had to dispel stereotypes about poc and does not take to avoid having to say she is white. She does not understand basic sociological concepts either. I do find it a shame that her human rights work has been wiped away by this media circus. The world is short those who have the courage to stand up for others.

A really delightful book! What a great counter-point to the hate-fest about her in the media, with no context. This book really tells her story and paints a much more believable picture than what you might have heard.

As an armchair anthropologist I already knew that geographic distribution of DNA doesn't (at all!) match the supposed "races," meaning that race is not genetic, but instead of a personal matter similar to ethnicity generally. Everything about her story matches what science is learning about the nature of race, and yet she is drummed out of modern society for her (very natural) response to her upbringing.

Save your money.

Save your money. I stopped reading when she wrote that doing her household chores as a child was the same as “the institution of chattel slavery in America” making her an indentured servant and this caused her to endure the same experience as black slaves. I stpped reading so I don't know is she ever addressed her stories about being discriminated against that were proven false...

This book was so good I laughed a lot the sex was steamy. My only complaint was I wanted a epilogue and I would have like Danes POV that's it other than that it was a great 1 1/2 read. Love Olivia books

Short, sexy, and sweet!

Luna has been crushing on Dane for years. Dane is her older, hot, but jerk of a stepbrother. Because of their world traveling parents, these two are left alone for a year and a half. One night together leaves them bonded forever! I enjoyed reading this story. It was cute, short, and sweet!

This was a quick sexy read that could have been longer had the author explored their pasts a little more. The characters felt rushed and a little flat to me. I did enjoy the book and I used KU to read this book. All comments and opinions expressed here are my own.

It involves explicit consideration of limit states, multiple load factors and resistance factors, and implicit probabilistic determination of relia� bility. The type of factoring used by LRFD differs from the allowable stress design of Chapters A through M of the 1989 Ninth Edition of the AISC Specifications for Allowable Stress Design, where only the resistance is divided by a factor of safety to obtain an allowable stress, and from the plastic design provisions of Chapter N, where the loads are multi� plied by a common load factor of 1.7 for gravity loads and 1.3 for gravity loads acting with wind or seismic loads. LRFD offers the structural engineer greater flexibility, rationality, and economy than the previous 1989 Ninth Edition of the AISC Specifications for Allowable Stress Design.

The Essential Steel Design and Reference

If you design steel members and connections this book is an absolute necessity. It contains the standard AISC member properties, as well as standard specifications for connections. Most importantly, Vol I includes the complete LRFD design specification(s) (1993) along with 500 pages of detailed notes carefully explaining each section of the LRFD design method. I found the notes and design examples very useful, thorough and easy to follow in actual practice. AISC of course provides the same extensive design charts that were used in ASD, as well as expanded appendices for design practice and commentary for this "new" method. The only drawback is the typical supplement of errata for this printing.
