A lot of people have made up their minds about Rachel Doležal. But none of them know her real story.
In June 2015, the media outed” Rachel Doležal as a white woman who had knowingly been passing” as Black. When asked if she were African American during an interview about the hate crimes directed at her and her family, she hesitated before ending the interview and walking away. Some interpreted her reluctance to respond and hasty departure as dishonesty, while others assumed she lacked a reasonable explanation for the almost unprecedented way she identified herself.
What determines your race? Is it your DNA? The community in which you were raised? The way others see you or the way you see yourself?
With In Full Color, Rachel Doležal describes the path that led her from being a child of white evangelical parents to an NAACP chapter president and respected educator and activist who identifies as Black. Along the way, she recounts the deep emotional bond she formed with her four adopted Black siblings, the sense of belonging she felt while living in Black communities in Jackson, Mississippi, and Washington, DC, and the experiences that have shaped her along the way.

Review
Finally, Rachel Doležal in her own voice and words shares her intriguing account and path of conscious self-definition, embodied in a life of activism. . . . Rachel forces us all to question what we have come to accept until now.”
Bishop Clyde N.S. Ramalaine, author of Preach a Storm, Live a Tornado
"Rachel Dolezal’s early life memoir is not simply a narrative of radical activism. . . . It serves to critique the cultural straightjacket of traditionalist white Protestant work ethic’ society. At this moment of alt-right reactionism, it punctures the fake nostalgia for an imagined pre-multiculturalism era of supposed purity and authenticity.”
Gavin Lewis, Black British writer and academic

This is book does not belong under sociology.
By Larissa Loyd
As long as you are reading this to get her side of the story and not for any deeper meaning, its a so-so book. It does have some black history peppered through it, but nothing beyond what I learned in an American History class in college.
While I do sympathize with her evangelical upbringing, it is not the same experience as what poc go through in their lives. Dolezal is missing the duel awareness that W.E.B DuBois speaks of along with the inability to escape the either/or thinking associated with those raised evangelical. She seems to have constructed this identity to avoid dealing with her white guilt. This is exhibited by the opportunities she had to dispel stereotypes about poc and does not take to avoid having to say she is white. She does not understand basic sociological concepts either. I do find it a shame that her human rights work has been wiped away by this media circus. The world is short those who have the courage to stand up for others.

What a great counter-point to the hate-fest about her in the media
By Amazon Customer
A really delightful book! What a great counter-point to the hate-fest about her in the media, with no context. This book really tells her story and paints a much more believable picture than what you might have heard.
As an armchair anthropologist I already knew that geographic distribution of DNA doesn't (at all!) match the supposed "races," meaning that race is not genetic, but instead of a personal matter similar to ethnicity generally. Everything about her story matches what science is learning about the nature of race, and yet she is drummed out of modern society for her (very natural) response to her upbringing.

Save your money.
By Barbara S.
Save your money. I stopped reading when she wrote that doing her household chores as a child was the same as “the institution of chattel slavery in America” making her an indentured servant and this caused her to endure the same experience as black slaves. I stpped reading so I don't know is she ever addressed her stories about being discriminated against that were proven false...
