The missing flight isn’t in the news quite as much now. The pings have stopped, and the search is entering a second, much slower, phase. The unanswered questions are many. But by most accounts, it is being assumed that the pilots are criminals, suicidal maniacs, hijackers, or terrorists, since no one else on the airplane appears to fit those descriptions. It may be a long time before we know for sure, but in the meantime, I believe the public, and particularly the pilot’s families, need to know that there is a high likelihood that they are victims, and heroic victims at that. The purpose of this book is also not to place blame on anyone in particular, although, as we’ll see, there might have been an opportunity to save the airplane. In the news, there does not seem to be much credibility given to the possibility that what happened was an accident. A rare accident, we hope, but an accident nonetheless. But even given an accident, can blame be placed for making the situation worse? Could there have been negligence in avoiding the escalation of an accident into a disaster? I say yes. I believe we can place blame for this, and it’s not on the pilots. Knowing more about how the airplane and its various systems work will help members of the public more accurately judge the relevancy of the various scenarios being discussed. I can imagine some of my friend’s eyes glazing over while reading some of the technical information presented in this book. And skimming over those sections or skipping them is OK. But these are the bases for the conclusions I reach, so you can either read them or take them on faith. This kind of knowledge will also answer questions like “why didn’t the passengers answer their cell phones?” and “was someone hiding in the cargo bay?”, and “how can the airplane fly by itself?”, and “a hacker got into the flight computer and flew the airplane!” If we keep speculation grounded in the real world, based on how things actually work (and don’t work), some of the more realistic theories can be better evaluated. That’s why there is so much engineering stuff in this book, which you may want to skip over. It’s there as much to explain what is impossible as much as what things are possible. My hypothesis is that the pilots are heroes. Lost in the dark, without flight instruments, with smoke in the cockpit, flying under extreme stress and awesome responsibility, and hoping against hope to see a fighter interceptor outside their window to guide them home, they knew the minutes left on their oxygen system were numbered. They have not survived their ordeal, and, in my opinion, died trying to save the flight. And this small book will not bring solace to the families of the rest of the crew and passengers. But the dedicated effort the pilots and crew probably made amidst the terror and confusion may be worthy of hero status. I feel for all of the victims’ families, but especially for the families of the pilots, who are not only grieving, but whose probably heroic loved ones are (perhaps necessarily, but unfortunately) being labeled otherwise.

About the Author
Mr. Choisser received his degree in electrical engineering at the University of Arizona, and took graduate courses in mathematics at Syracuse University. He is an Air Force veteran, having been an officer in the Data Processing Branch of the Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Directorate of Rome Air Development Center, Griffiss AFB, New York. Upon leaving the service, he was awarded the Air Force Systems Command Award for Scientific Achievement. In his business career, his work involved the development of low-light-level sensors for military and scientific uses. He is one of the co-inventors and developer of the Digicon, the multi-channel photon counting image tubes used in both of the original Hubble Space Telescope spectrographs. He was awarded special recognition for this work by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. His longest career was designing and building industrial versions of the IBM PC. An early project was with Teledyne Ryan, helping with the design of the cockpit data recorder for the Boeing 747. His subsequent work with industry and the military resulted in the use of Microsoft DOS and Windows in a wide variety of non-desktop applications. He was editor-in-chief of the Windows CE Tech Journal, a Miller-Freeman publication. His hobbies have always been airplanes, gardening, cooking, and golf. Writing has been a life-long pursuit, now more for pleasure than for business. Today his books involve cooking, aquaponics, and books intended to induce curiosity and wonder in young people about math, science, and engineering. A shot in the dark

At barely 80 pages, this apparently self-published work would better be described as an editorial pamphlet than a book. Although written by a thoughtful and well-qualified engineer, it contains no original research or any source material outside the public domain. After filling most of the pages with dry technical information about the aircraft involved, the author concludes abruptly with a single hypothesis as to the cause of the accident, without a scrap of proof. One of the most obvious questions, that of why no debris has been found, is not addressed at all. I applaud the author`s attempt to defend the innocence of the pilots in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, but nothing contained here provides any real insight towards solving this historic aviation mystery.

The book itself has a lot of good information about the Boeing 777

This book is almost worth five-stars. However, in addition to several minor complaints, I have a policy of deducting a star from any non-fiction book that does not have an index. The book itself has a lot of good information about the Boeing 777, the flight o MH370 and civil aviation in general. I detail my one criticism in this area below. I do wish the book had been a little longer; 75 pages are really not enough, although Choisser manages to 75 pages. For those who wish more information, with equal authenticity and technical competence, I recommend “Into Oblivion: Understanding MH370” by Capt. Samir (Sam) Kohli –although I must warn that it has some production issues (misspellings and awkward orientation of figures and diagrams).
Another complaint with this sort of book is the lack of a glossary, although the detailed table of contents (2½ pages for ~ 65 pages of text), remedied my memory lapses.
Finally comes my one technical complaint. The author admits in several places that he does not comprehend how altitude can be known without transponder returns. Notably, on page 67 he states: “It’s not clear to me how, without transponders, primary radar can detect this, and it still hasn’t been explained.” Also, on page 16 “…altitude excursions took place. How was this detected with tranponder off? Not by normal primary radar, but maybe true.” [emphasis in original].
While civilian radars rely on the tracked aircraft’s transponder to inform them of the aircraft’s altitude, the military cannot expect hostile aircraft to cooperate in this manner. Air defense radar sites have either height finder radars or 3-D radars to estimate aircraft heights. In fact, on page 73 the author states “Malaysian military reported seeing the unidentified blips on what we are calling leg 2.” I am a little surprised that someone with the author’s U.S. Air Force experience was not aware of this, especially as it has been publicized that military radars traced some of the path of the flight. The author claims to have been an AF officer assigned to the Rome Air Development Center at Griffiss Air Force Base.
The book was first published 3½ months after the disappearance, so it is quite impressive that the author was able to gather and present so much information. There is a subsequent kindle version, which I have not viewed, published about a year later

Not what I expected

Disappointed. Not a good attempt at explaining the facts. The book spent most of the time explaining the 777 technical equipment and their operation, however, most of the explanations were tenuously linked to the flight in question.
An interesting read but not in depth enough to provide a realistic hypothesis. Buy it but don't expect any revelations.
