Grade 4-8-Fletcher follows members of a sixth-grade class through a day when their substitute teacher never shows. The students decide not to report that they are alone and to run the class by themselves. Personal issues are woven into the day's events. Rachel has been mute since a classmate who had an annoying, unrequited crush on her died six months before. Bastian, an Air Force brat used to moving, has to decide whether to subject his beloved puppy to a lengthy quarantine when he moves to Hawaii the following day. Sean's alcoholic father and unnurturing home life make him too shy to express his feelings, especially his crush on Rachel. Karen, a natural leader and "good child," takes the reins in the class, making her own evaluations of right and wrong. Jessica, whose parents are judgmental, can't get past her fear of recrimination to enjoy the class' freedom. The students learn about themselves and one another, and several issues are resolved by the end of the day (e.g., Rachel speaks, Bastian gives his puppy to Sean). The resolutions are simple but not pat, the prose is economical but not sparse, and the characters are developed as sketches rather than in-depth portraits, which helps keep the book moving briskly. The premise will make the novel easy to booktalk. Not a must-have, but a worthwhile purchase.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS EVER WRITTEN!

Flying Solo made be cry so many times it's not even funny. The heart-warming story of selective mute Rachel White, Sarcastic puppy-loving Bastian Fauvell, shy drunken-fathered Sean O'Day, and future cheif justice of supreme court Jessica Cooke, will guarantee to change your life. The story is about a very non-typical April 28, the sixth month anniversery of the death of Tommy Feathers a kid who had a huge crush on Rachel, where Mr. "Fab" Fabiano's class is left without a teacher. This day is narrated by Rachel as she goes through a day like no other. A day where "Kids Rule!"

Can they go solo................or will the crash?

This story is about a Teacher, Mr. Fabiano. He is planning a vaction. When the subsitute calls in and say's she sick, the people in the school forget. So, Mr.Fabs class is left alone. It was Bastains, the brat, last day at the school, so they did a rock ritual. They got stones and said something good about him. When it was Rachel Whites turn, because, when Tommy Feather's died she never talked anymore, she wrote down things that said how Bastain was mean to Tommy. This is a great book. The one thing I abseoultetley love so much is that this could really happen. Not one of those book's that is so fake not even the chareceter's could be real. This story is great and it is a fun story, figuring out if the class will go steady for one day, but then, sad, bacause the only person is Rachel who remembers that it was Tommy Feathers 6 month anniversery for his death. This book is for everybody!!!

I read Flying Solo aloud to my 6th grade class. They had previously heard Someone is Hiding on Alcatraz Island. Flying Solo doesn't have the mystery of Alcatraz Island, but it deals with other important issues for 6th graders today. One student thought it was "neat" to hear the story through the various characters' point of view. I had them write a letter to me when we finished. They were to tell me their opinion and they were to answer the question: Have you ever mistreated a student in this class? They were very honest. I loved it. My class didn't feel they could ever"fly solo." (They're right next door to the school office.) Enjoy this book. We did!

David E. Garland (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is William B. Hinson Professor of Christian Scriptures and dean for academic affairs at George W. Truett Seminary, Baylor University. He is the New Testament editor for the revised Expositor's Bible Commentary and the author of various books and commentaries, including Mark and Colossians/Philemon in the NIV Application Commentary, and the article on Mark in the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary. Luke ZECNT

Students and pastors have been blessed with many good recent works on the Gospel of Luke. One thinks of Green's NICNT volume and Bock's massive two-volume contribution to the BECNT series. The most recent offering in the ZECNT series is this new commentary on the Gospel of Luke by David Garland. This is my first commentary I have ever read by David Garland but I have read each of the previous volumes in the ZECNT series and thus can compare the quality and usefulness of this commentary compared to the other ZECNT volumes so far available.

For those not familiar with the format of the ZECNT series, there is much to be liked here for the student and pastor. As an exegetical commentary, naturally the commentary provides fairly detailed exegesis of the Greek text and it also includes other useful features for each section such as outlines, literary structure, main idea summary, and theology in application. Each of these features work better in some of these commentaries than others, mostly dependent on the respective authors of the commentaries. So what about Garland's contribution on Luke's Gospel?

First, the positive: Garland's commentary is fairly comprehensive (almost 1000 pages) and he generally does a great job of explaining the text and commenting on Greek grammar and syntax as it is appropriate and helpful to the reader. Garland also does a good job in discussing the literary structure of the text and showing how the different sections of Luke relate to one another. Garland also rightly connects Luke to Acts in his interpretation and exegesis of phrases and emphases that are uniquely Lukan.

Second, the negative: While this commentary is basically helpful in summarizing the text and in assisting the reader to properly exegete the book, it also doesn't offer anything really unique that I have not read in other commentaries on this Gospel. Garland generally restates the basic meaning of the text but he does not seem as incisive as some other commentators. Theologically, Garland also does not seem as strong as other commentators. While I disagree with some of Garland's own theological views, I also don't find the commentary to be as helpful theologically as Green's commentary.

In general, this commentary is helpful as a resource for exegesis, but there are other good commentaries on Luke available. I'd recommend Garland's work as a second commentary on Luke in addition to Green or Bock. The format of the ZECNT series is especially helpful in addition to these other commentaries available since it consciously seeks to integrate aspects of the interpretation that are sometimes not given their proper due in some commentary series.

Makes some unique contributions

Garland's commentary on Luke is more than 1,000 pages, but this should not be a surprise, since Luke is the longest Gospel. Like the rest of the ZECNT series, it is "designed for the pastor and Bible teacher." Garland assumes a basic knowledge of Greek, but Greek is not required to understand his commentary. For each passage the commentary gives the broader literary context, the main idea (great for preachers!), an original translation of the Greek and its graphical layout, the structure, an outline, explanation, and "theology in application" section.

The graphical layout of each passage is a unique contribution that Garland's Luke makes to Luke studies. Even though a narrative book like Luke is easier to follow than some of Paul's detailed arguments, seeing main clauses in bold with subordinate clauses indented under them (plus how they relate back to the main clause) gives the reader a quick, visual grasp of the entire passage at hand. Garland does this well, too.

Luke has the full Greek text of Luke, verse by verse, and full English translation by Garland (passage by passage in the graphical layout, then again verse by verse next to the Greek). A value for me in using reference works is not having to pull five more reference works off the shelf to use the first reference work! This is about as portable as exegesis of Luke gets. Garland's English translation is a bit wooden at times--just about every kai in the opening narrative of 1:5-25 receives the translation "and," which it shouldn't always.

Garland's intro is short, but covers what it needs to. He attributes authorship to Luke and holds to Luke-Acts unity, as many scholars do. ("[Luke] is writing not simply about the life of Jesus but what Jesus inaugurated that continued in the deeds of his followers (Acts 1:1-8)" (27).) He understands Luke-Acts as fitting into the genre of "Hellenistic historiography." He treats Luke's potential sources, date of writing, readers, location, purpose, and structural outline. There is an additional "theology of Luke" section at the back of the commentary that complements the introduction. It doesn't cover all the theological themes in Luke (healing/exorcism, for example, is absent), but it doesn't claim to, either.

Where Garland really shines in this commentary is in his treatment of the Greek words and phrases that comprise the Luke text. He attends to the lexical meaning of given words, how they function in context, and their use in other parts of Scripture. This is helpful especially for parts of Luke where the Greek vocabulary is more obscure or difficult.

Teachers and preachers especially will appreciate the "Theology in Application" section that concludes each passage. To the pastor wondering how to preach on something like Luke's prologue, Garland writes: "The purpose of the gospel is not to give information but certainty that will change lives. Erudition about Jesus is not the same as insight into Jesus. The history of Jesus is not to be divorced from the proclamation about Jesus, as if the two were somehow incompatible" (58).

This comes after a detailed exegesis of the first four verses. As someone with preaching experience, I can say this combination of thorough attention to the Greek text with contemporary application is pure gold.

Inevitably no commentary can say everything about every word in the text, but there are parts of Luke that I thought deserved more attention. For example, in Luke 8:31 the demons known as Legion beg Jesus not to cast them into the Abyss. Garland just offers, "The Abyss is the place of punishment for evil spirits" (358). Although he infers that this verse shows the "eschatological dimension" to exorcisms, nothing more is given about the word "abyss." For a word that appears just once in the Gospels yet multiple times in the Old Testament and Apocrypha, more background on this term would have been useful to the reader. This could, of course, merely reflect a space limitation in the commentary.

On the other hand, Garland's commentary on the Good Samaritan parable ("merciful" as Garland has it) leaves out just about nothing. To provide needed historical context to the passage, Garland draws on what Josephus said about priests, what Sirach said about helping those in need, and includes an excursus on the "adversarial history" of Jews and Samaritans. Garland compellingly concludes from the parable: "The original Jewish audience must enter the ditch and accept a Samaritan as a savior, helper, and healer. They must experience being touched by this unclean enemy who treats a wounded man as a compatriot" (446).

Garland seeks to prove right the series claim that "all who strive to understand and teach the New Testament will find these books beneficial," and he succeeds in this. Preachers or students of Luke will want to supplement

Garland's work with other works on Luke (Bock's two volume set remains the standard), but the graphical layout of each passage and the theology in application sections alone are enough to warrant careful consideration of this volume.

A worthwhile purchase by a capable commentator

The Zondervan Exegetical Commentary series is well underway, with the publication of James, Galatians, Matthew, Ephesians and now Luke joining the number. This volume follows the vision of the series with the focus on accessible Greek language examination/translation and theological discussion in the commentary, and with an application section that concludes each section.

David Garland works through Luke largely by means of literary criticism (akin to Osborne's work on Matthew). He observes differences between the gospels to highlight Luke's unique perspective (this is seen most clearly in the passion narrative). Depending on the section, he works verse-by-verse and comments concisely on important Greek words. He includes quotations (sometimes lenghty) of relevant Jewish and Greco-Roman writings to help seat Luke's account of Jesus inside its first-century world, and he isn't afraid to look to Acts when explaining Luke.

While all of this sounds like standard fare for a commentary, it is done exceptionally well by Garland. While not a Luke specialist per se, he is a commentary specialist--with commentaries on Matthew, Mark, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians and Colossians/Philemon under his belt. His writing is clear and concise, and his prose can shift between clever turns of phrase to reverent solemnity. This is most evident in the application sections, where he encourages care for the needy or speaks on divorce with pastoral sensitivity.

Depending on what one needs in a commentary, this one-volume work is a great foundation for studying and preaching on Luke. For scholars, he cites with the standard commentaries and monographs (Tyson, Karris, Fitzmeyer), but he doesn't go into lengthy debate or disagreement with them. His quotes from Jewish and Greco-Roman sources will be of the most help for deep study and writing exegesis papers. Pastors will benefit from its concise explanations, frequent-yet-gentle use of Greek, emphasis on the 'big picture' of Luke and the theological summaries. This commentary is most similar to Bock and Green, but with less historical-critical analysis than the former and a more traditional perspective than the latter. So whatever your need is for a commentary on Luke, give this one a look.

Trofimov covers Islamic culture for the Wall Street Journal, a wide beat that has him reporting stories from West Africa to Central Asia and even in Eastern Europe. This political travelogue includes dispatches from the front lines of the American invasion of Iraq and the subsequent attempts at creating a democratic regime. There are plenty of by now familiar stories of American troops and politicians bumbling through an increasingly resentful Iraqi society (including the deaths of an Italian diplomat and legitimate Iraqi politician at the hands of U.S. troops). But Trofimov gets fresh material on Saudi Arabia, where, despite severe economic downturns, men continue to hire thousands of foreign workers because they refuse to trust fellow "sex-obsessed" Saudis to chauffeur their wives who are forbidden from driving. Arab Perspectives on the 2001 Iraq War

Although the author traveled throughout the Middle East during the 1990s (as a roving foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal), this book is based on his travels through various Islamic countries: Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Yemen, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Mali and Bosnia, in 2001-2004. With his knowledge of Arabic he was able to have direct talks with many Muslim leaders and civilians. He was always diligent in asking almost each individual as to why they disliked U.S. military personnel in liberating Iraq from Saddam, and why they wanted the U.S. military out of Iraq and quickly as possible. He notes how the average Saudi's income has "shrunk by as much as three-quarters in one generation." Explained why Saudi's fear the U.S. presence there to control the Middle East and keep oil prices low (okay, sounds fairly reasonable, besides the pro-democracy pitch). One Saudi holy man didn't want to talk to the author because he didn't want to "be defiled by direct contact with me." Trofimov noted how Saudi's don't like visitors, and journalists even less. Saudi's like to know which Islamic "sect" you belong to. He noted that Saudi officials don't like foreign businesses to have an "X" it their name, because it "looks too much like a Christian cross" (pg.8). Trofimov notes how Islamists dislike the Sufis. The author notes how Hindu workers who live in Saudi cannot be cremated there because the practice is barred by the Sharia; so the Hindu corpse has to be shipped out (pg.13). Non-Muslims cannot be buried in Saudi Arabia, because they would defile the land. So some are buried in the semi-secret non-Muslim cemetery in Jeddah (p.14). While women can't drive cars, they can drive small dune buggies at parks. There are literally hundreds of these small, personal "snippets" that one doesn't read in U.S. newspapers; they alone are worth buying this book. The author notes how he traveled behind U.S. military forces that invaded Iraq; and the perils of driving unescorted by the military. The author discusses the road blocks, the aftermath of some of the suicide attacks, and being shot at. This is not a history book on Arabia; this is really more of a "travel adventure" book -- but of your worst nightmare: in the Iraqi combat zone. There are so many fine things to say about this book, written by an individual who "was there" during the liberation of Iraq, and one who witnessed the building frustration by some Iraqis to the American presence there. Nor to be overlooked are the findings by Trofimov about how Muslims in the other Arab countries that he visited view the American adventure into Iraq. Many, many personal anecdotes written by a reporter who got away from Baghdad's "Green Zone" to talk with the villagers.

A Great Personal Journey - An Exciting Personal Account

First of all let me say: I love first-person accounts of events and activities. There is nothing more fascinating, in my opinion, than reading about the experiences that someone has endured firsthand and who is providing an interpretation of those very experiences. Even more fascinating and, for that matter, relevant, is someone who is providing us with a diary or journal about contemporary events that we are watching or reading about on the daily news via television, radio, magazines, and the newspapers. Yaroslav Trofimov, in his book "Faith at War," is doing just that.

While I may contest the author's interpretations of the experiences he has had, I cannot in good faith dispute the "facts" of his experiences. He is, so to speak, "telling it as it is and as it was," and I cannot argue with that, considering the fact he has "been there" and "done that." I have not experienced what he has, nor have I gone where he has gone. I have to listen to what he has to say, as does every reader of his book. He has, however, provided me with an insight into much which I didn't understand and which, I hope, others who read his book, can begin to understand as well.

Considering what is going on "really" in our world today, Trofimov, in his "Faith at War," does provide a window that all of us need to consider and contemplate. There is no question about the relevance of his subject. Islam and what is going on in the Middle East is important to us all. Trofimov, who covers the Middle East and Islamic culture for the "Wall Street Journal," gives us an insightful look into what is going on and what may be anticipated in that part of the world.

I think what impressed me most about Trofimov's book is the lack of an obvious political agenda, a problem which afflicts most books about the Middle East "problem" today and which he seems to deliberately avoid. His appears to be merely a "sane" account of his own experiences as those experiences occurred. While no personal narrative is completely free of some editorial position, Trofimov certainly doesn't, in my view, flaunt any particular political prejudice.

I was particularly interested in his discussion of Mali, a "democratic" country in Africa where most of the people are Muslim. This was news to me; but, then, I don't currently study African nations or society. While I was under the impression that almost every country which was Islamic was "undemocratic" by nature of the religion, it was refreshing to learn that that was not exactly true.

The journey that Trofimov takes is actually awesome. The book begins in Saudi Arabia (and he provides some information that every American needs to know), proceeds on to Tunisia ("Teaching Freud to the Mullahs," 'nuff said), then on to Yemen and Kuwait, then on to Iraq (very, very interesting to say the least), then on to Afghanistan for two chapters, ending with chapters on Lebanon, Mali (the "Muslim democracy"), and finally Bosnia (which is primarily Muslim in case you have forgotten or not watched the news for the past decade).

This book is a personal journal or diary. There is no getting around that. But it is an interesting and intriguing account from a first-rate observer of the contemporary scene. There is, in my view, no getting around that. The author also provides an interesting and valuable glossary of religious and political terms related to the subject he is discussing, an index of topics, and a number of maps so the reader can place geographical areas and regions in context. Hurray for those tools, especially for the ordinary reader who is not a specialist.

Altogether, I recommend this book just on the basis that I enjoyed reading it. Like I said, I enjoy reading first-person accounts. Maybe it's the psychology of the "vicarious" experience. Whatever, Trofimov's book is a good read and an exciting adventure and I think most readers who are interested in what's going on in our world today will like this book. Highly recommended.

read this to understand "why they hate us"

This beautifully reported and written book give readers a real on-the-ground feel for how people in the Muslim world view America and how 9/11 and our intervention in Iraq have intensified feelings about American power, consumerism, and intentions. Particularly compelling are this book's insights into how religion defines so many aspects of life and how others are viewed. Even as you are disgusted at some of the abuses perpetrated on the Muslim world by its own leaders, you will be ashamed at the insensitive behavior of American soldiers and strategic mistakes that undermine the benevolent image that many Americans want to believe characterizes our efforts to "bring democracy" to the Middle East. The author does not let either side off the hook. Reading FAITH AT WAR will help readers understand why the results of the Iraq invasion fell so far from what was hoped for. This is a much-needed critical view of the Middle East from the point of view of those who live there.

About the Author
Arthur George Morrison (1863-1945) was born and raised in the East End of London. His journalism was first published in the Globe in 1885 and he then worked as a clerk to the Beaumont Trustees, becoming sub-editor of the house paper, the Palace Journal. He left at the end of 1890 to join the editorial staff of the evening Globe before publishing his first book, The Shadows around Us, a collection of supernatural tales, in 1891. It is his acclaimed and controversial East End works though, Tales of Mean Streets (1894), A Child of the Jago (1896), and The Hole in the Wall (1902), for which he is best known.

Another old novel, based in tragedy and hardship, working its way through misadventures and ruthless selfishness, coming out .... well, no spoilers, OK? There's nothing profound or startling here, but it's a good story and I enjoyed it.
