Digital Signal Processing in Modern Communication Systems takes you on a journey that starts with basic DSP principles and ends with a treatment of modern wireless modems like OFDM and single-tone transceivers. Throughout this journey, we will cover signal processing topics that are applicable not just to the field of communications but to many engineering disciplines. This text steps outside the often dry mathematical presentation of more traditional DSP books and provides a more intuitive approach to this fascinating topic. Some of this book’s uniqueness can be summarized as follows: - An intuitive approach to the topic of digital signal processing. - Working in-book MatLab examples supporting all important concepts. - A large scope covering basic concepts (correlation, convolution, DFT, FIR filters …) as well as advanced topics (optimization, adaptive signal processing, equalization, OFDM, MIMO … ). - MatLab modeling of analog/RF effects (multipath channel, thermal noise, phase noise, IQ imbalances, DC and frequency offsets) that must be addressed and solved in modern modem design. - Real world topics that go beyond the ordinary communication textbooks such as signal synchronization, modem rate management, and fixed-point effects. All in all, this book is a must-have for students and practicing engineers who want to build upon the principles of Digital Signal Processing, enrich their understanding with advanced topics, and then apply that knowledge to the design of modern wireless modems.

This was just the right book for me on DSP
By Andy N1KSN
This book has been a very useful self-study textbook on DSP. Half way through it I felt confident enough to start designing some DSP software for a shortwave receiver project. It is a very practical, hands on reference.

Since I am a retired hobbyist I have used Octave, which is free, rather than Matlab for the examples. The translation was pretty easy, but it took some work to develop the statements necessary to reproduce the plots in the book. And a couple of the scripts in the book could use some editing. But overall this was a good way to learn Octave, and I have adapted some of the scripts for designing my receiver project.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to other amateur radio operators or electronics hobbyists interested in learning some DSP provided they realize that to get the most out of the book they must work through the examples themselves. And it wouldn't hurt to have another reference like the book by Lyons handy.

This book may not be all you need, but its close.
By C Moses
This is one of those books that end up dog-eared, with about 30 sticky notes sticking out of it as subject indexes. We all have about 3 to 4 of them, and this is destined to be one.
This book starts with the bare essentials on every subject covered, proceeds in a logical and short manner through the needed math functions, to actually performing the task. When you proceed thru coding up any of the matlab examples, you not only know how to do the task, but you know why.
This is a perfect text for anyone who is starting their foray into DSP, and will end up being the old reliable text that you keep referring to as you develop your knowledge in this arena. It is also a perfect text for a generalist RF or Controls engineer who must interface and use DSP techniques in performance of their projects.

My New Reference Book for DSP
By J. Yarnell
I now own three books on DSP and this book has quickly become my "go to" reference.

Reasons:

1. The book includes a great refresher in the relevant mathematics rather than shoving it to the back of the book in the appendix.
2. There is a concise set of instructions to quickly get the reader familiar with use of Matlab.
3. Matlab code is provided in the book that can be copied and used to work through the examples in the book, and modified to use for the reader's own applications.
4. The author is very responsive to email questions as they relate to the Matlab examples.

My job requires me to be familiar with DSP functions and how they relate to the system at large. This book does a great job of explaining the functions, how they work and how they're implemented, (complete with code), without getting bogged down with lengthy written explanations and little to no mention of the physical implementation.

In summary, if you are new to DSP and want to start quickly, or if you are an experienced DSP engineer and need an inclusive reference, you should consider this book.
