La nia alemana (The German Girl Spanish edition): Novela (Atria Espanol), by Armando Lucas Correa

La niña alemana (The German Girl Spanish edition) Hannah Berlín, 1939

Mamá comienza a gritarle.

Entonces comenzaron a planificar nuestra huida.

Me sentí libre.

Comencé a temblar. Grité “¡Papá!”, pero nadie vino a rescatarme. ¡Mamá! No había vuelta a atrás.

Qué pena me da.

By Sara Andrea

Needs to be proofread better -- there were typos and words that were hyphenated in the middle of a line for no reason. Very interesting story, but sad. I felt a contrast between the hopelessness and sense of doom Hannah and her mother felt and their intelligence and financial stability that might have allowed them to fulfill that dream of making it to the US. Most of the characters were clearly and well defined, but something was lacking as to the description of Hannah's brother, Gustav, and his son, Louis. How did it affect Gustav to marry another Jewish woman, whose family situation was similar to his, and how were they affected by the Cuban Revolution in such a different way than Hannah and her mother? How did Hannah and her mother manage to keep the house after the Revolution, and live without working? How did living in Cuba affect their personalities after living in Berlin and why didn't they ever make it to NY? What were the repercussions for Captain Gustav and the crew of the Saint Louis for being kind and humane to their Jewish passengers? What was the rest of his life like? So many questions, which may some day be answered in a sequel. I couldn't put the book down while reading it.

200 Years of Latino History in Philadelphia, by Staff of Al Dia

200 years of Latino History in Philadelphia is a rich visual account of the history of Latinos in the city. It traces the development of distinct neighborhoods and institutions, and provides a uniquely intimate portrait of a community.

Broken into four sections, the book documents the city’s earliest Latino public figures, including Father Flix Varela, the 19th-century Cuban emigre who established the first Spanish-language newspaper. The second section collects snapshots of the Latino community from 1950 to 1980. Many of these were selected from personal photo albums and reflect the seldom-documented day-to-day lives of Latinos. Professional photos showcase the years 1980 to 1990, and the final section of the book documents the past twenty years in the community through Al Da’s weekly news coverage.

The language is easy to understand

It's a text book required for my class. The language is easy to understand, sometimes a little too easy. It does the job of a text book and aids my understanding of the material.

Boring, repetitive
By James L. Holland II
Boring, repetitive, and hard to finish. Each chapter seems like a restatement of the last. This book reads as if it's an ongoing justification for Interdisciplinary Studies. Lots of theory and terminology, little in terms of concrete steps to take.

Law in America: A Short History (Modern Library Chronicles Series Book 10), by Lawrence M. Friedman

“Law in America is a little gem. It is a peerless introduction to our legal history—concise, clear, tellingly told, and beautifully written. The greatest living historian of American law has done it again.”
—Stanley N. Katz,
former president of the American Society for Legal History and the Organization of American Historians

“All societies have laws, but neither all laws nor all legal systems are alike. No one has thought more deeply or written more clearly about the peculiar role of law in American life than Lawrence Friedman. In this trenchant, illuminating book, he distills a lifetime of scholarship and teaching into a concise and provocative explanation of the role that law has played in shaping the distinctive contours of American history and culture.”
—David M. Kennedy,
professor of history at Stanford University and author of Freedom from Fear

Throughout America’s history, our laws have been a reflection of who we are, of what we value, of who has control. They embody our society’s genetic code. In the masterful hands of the subject’s greatest living historian, the story of the evolution of our laws serves to lay bare the deciding struggles over power and justice that have shaped this country from its birth pangs to the present. Law in America is a supreme example of the historian’s art, its brevity a testament to the great elegance and wit of its composition.

Amazon.com Review
Although, in the eyes of many, the law "moves slowly and sluggishly" behind society's advances, Lawrence M. Friedman, in Law in America, a historical overview from colonial times to the present, posits that this is an "illusion." As surely as culture creates law, law creates culture. The American legal system--a bubbling mlange of common ("judge-made") and civil (derived from codes) law--is a "complicated beast," born of thousands of political entities. Originally a "crude and stripped down" descendant of English law, American law in the 19th century was often an instrument of "economic promotion." In the 20th century, with the rise of a national economy, an evermore heterogeneous population, waning federalism, and the rise of what Friedman calls the "administrative-welfare state," the law daily reached further, into the jurisdiction of civil rights of all stripes, product liability, malpractice, and environmental and antitrust considerations. Friedman's chapters on the colonial period and family law are strong, while his look at the contemporary legal climate drifts toward a general discussion of political and social mores. --H. O'Billovich

From Library Journal
Friedman (law, Stanford Univ.; A History of American Law) is a prolific writer of works that place the growth and evolution of American law and criminal justice into historical perspective. The current text is a concise and lucid overview of the development of the law as it parallels the track of American social, economic, political, and cultural history. Friedman evinces a theory of concomitance, in which the forward movement of pressures, practices, procedures, and polities in the ostensibly nonlegal categories of American society automatically triggers a corresponding crush of complex creations in their juridical counterparts. In the early 19th century, for instance, the spotlight shone on rapid growth, the expansion of enterprise, and the release of creative economic energy. Thus, a railroad employee named Nicholas Farwell, who suffered a terrible injury on the job in 1842, was forced by the court to turn to family, friends, and the church for solace and recompense. Fortunately, by the mid-20th century, the concept of a social safety net had evolved, along with the modern administrative-welfare system and a strict regulatory framework that probably would have prevented Farwell's injury in the first place. Enjoyable for the lay reader, this book will make a pleasant addition to most public and academic libraries. Philip Y. Blue, New York State Supreme Court Criminal Branch Law Lib., First Judicial Dist., New York
Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Friedman, a law professor and author of American Law in the 20th Century [BKL My 1 02],reflects on law through the evolving social needs and circumstances of our nation. He takes the interest and circumstances of America's social realities and interposes them in the law as an interactive force. The law of the American colonial period was often the opposite of what we take for granted today; religious tolerance was nonexistent and sin was a crime. As the U.S. evolved, economic interests came to dominate the law. Thus, slavery, which is today a crime, was formerly legal, at least if the slaves were black, and indentured servitude evolved from a status predominated by whites during the colonial era and black sharecroppers in the post-Reconstruction era. Friedman shows how a free enterprise perspective dominated U.S. Supreme Court rulings until the New Deal period, when President Roosevelt shifted the focus to the concerns of ordinary people, creating administrative systems that prompted increasing reliance on regulatory agencies to address the nation's needs. A Legal Primer for All
By Rob Hardy
Lawrence Friedman has a way to start up his Introduction to American Law class at Stanford. On the morning of the first class, he buys a _San Francisco Chronicle_, and simply shows the class the paper and reads the headlines. If it is interesting enough to get in the paper, he demonstrates, the story will mention a law, a proposal for a law, something a policeman or judge has done, what the President says about a legal situation, and so on. "In the world we live in - in the country we live in - almost nothing has more impact on our lives, nothing is more entangled with our everyday existence, than that something we call the _law_." So he writes in _Law in America: A Brief History_ (Modern Library), a concise account of how law has affected American society and vice versa. That the two are deeply connected is not an original theme, but Friedman's book is a superb primer on how the law came to be the way it is in our country, and how it came to be so particularly important here.
Friedman goes to the source of our law, the English _common_ law system, in which judges created laws as they decided various cases and set precedent. (Most European law systems are based on _civil_ law, whose ancestor is Roman law. A civil law system is based on codes, huge statutes that, theoretically, the judges cannot add to nor subtract from, but only interpret.) Our local laws were originally made for close knit communities in which everyone knew each other. They were interested in punishing sin as a crime. The punishments afforded included branding and whipping, which besides being painful, would mark the recipient as the community saw him; shame and stigma worked for the community better than loss of freedom. Friedman traces the effects of the Industrial Revolution, and the lack of legal recourse for factory employees harmed on the job. It was not until the twentieth century that an employee could count on compensation for a job injury. The protectionism of twentieth law has paralleled the growth in national government as opposed to local government. The economy unified (a mall in Florida looks the same as one in Alaska), and styles are national rather than local. The Rehnquist Supreme Court has shown some interest in "breathing life into the corpse of the dead doctrine of state's rights," but given the grants that the federal government enjoys overseeing and the huge body of federal regulations covering minute areas of enterprise, and given the spotlight that the president himself enjoys, it seems unlikely that the center of attention will shift back to the states.
Friedman's examples and his brief explanations of important decisions are excellent. He includes capsule histories of such phenomena as slavery and the civil rights movement, as well as the increasing rights given to women, Native Americans, and homosexuals. His discussion of divorce then and now along with the philosophy concerning common law marriage is an engaging summary. His smoothly-written book is valuable for anyone who is curious about how our laws and enforcement got to be so important and so distinctly American.

A Study of the Nature of American Law
By Robin Friedman
Professor Friedman's book is subtitled "A Short History" of American Law. The book does indeed take a historical approach, but its subject is more the nature of American law than its detailed history. Professor Friedman describes how our law has become what it is and the sources of change in the law.
The theme of his book is that law follows social and economic changes. It responds to the needs that people in society assert. At the beginning of the 21st Century, we live in a large, pluralistic, technologicaly complex, impersonal and interdependent country. We are all dependent upon the actions of other people whom we don't know and don't control to meet even the most basic needs of our daily lives. The growing complexity and bulk of our laws, in economic relations, family law, criminal law and much else changes in response to social needs and mores. In addition, there has been a move towards centalization -- for people to look to the Federal government as a source of law and as an aggresive participant in social change and in the satisfaction of needs.
Given his basic claim that law follows society, Professor Friedman provides a short, useful, overview of law in the colonial period pointing out how societies were smaller, more homogeneous in terms of culture and religion and more able to use more intimate, so to speak, forms of social control than those available to the current administrative state. He follows this with a good discussion of law and economics which suggests how and why the focus of tort law has changed from protecting growing business to protecting workers. A section on family law explores the effect of changing sexual mores, among other matters, on the nature of law. There is a discussion of the changing nature of race relations and of the role of the modern large welfare state.
The book is clearly written. It is thoughtful and provocative in that Professor Friedman sets out a thesis and proceeds to expound and defend it in his exposition of American law. His book is not and does not purport to be a full, complete treatment of American legal history. It is possible too that the nature of legal change and the interrelationship between law and social change is more complex and multi-layered than the book takes it to be. This book is a short, good introduction to American law which should stimulate the reader in his or her own thinking.

A Long Essay on the Shifting Law in America
By Ricky Hunter
The Modern Library Chronicle Book series continues on its merry way with another valuable addition to its series. Lawrence M. Friedman has contributed Law in America (A Short History) that is not exactly a traditional history but more an quick and easy to read examination of the importance of the law in America and how it not separate from society but actually an integral part of its surrounding culture, not leading but not entirely led by this zeitgeist. The author touches on many important court cases to back this theory but he also broadens the very concept of law beyond the court room and expands it to include, appropriately, the government in all its aspects, from the Senate to police officers, from the Food and Drug Administration to marriages. He also show the ongoing centralization of the law in America, particularly through the Supreme Court, despite limited attacks on this by the recent Supreme Court. This is an essay that will prove fascinating to the non-specialist.

Quick read to help understand the underlying basics of an interview.
By deepsoul13
This book describes a 3-step system for what an interview is about and how to master it. I personally did not find the 3-step system helpful, but I did gain a better understanding of what interviewers are looking for. Ultimately the message was that your duty as an interviewee is to make it easy for the interviewers to see why they should pick you. It helps you realize that some questions asked by the interviewers are more to see how you think, especially under pressure, than to see what you'll answer.

It's a fairly thin book, and is a quick read. It does provide some answer examples (both good and bad) to common questions; including the "tell me about yourself" question that everyone hates.

Helpful for those feeling unprepared
By Brian
Do your medical school interviews have you feeling worried or unprepared? Then this book is the right choice for you. The book is relatively short but has many insightful observations and humorous anecdotes. I bought this book because I felt I needed to prepare for my interviews, and after reading the book and preparing, it game me confidence going into the interview season, which was priceless.

That being said, the book is giving you one person's opinion. Sometimes the book over emphasizes certain topics or asks you to prepare too thoroughly for some questions. Medical school interviews can go either way, some admission officers hate scripted answers while other ones want very concise and thought out answers. I believe it is a mix of the two options, so if you buy this book and read it, take everything you read with a grain of salt.

After getting accepted at several different medical schools and having had a chance to reflect on how I prepared and performed in my interviews, I would suggest to current pre-med students that they do not over think/script their interviews. Your scripted answers are easy to see through, and often the interviewer just wants you to answer their question. They are uninterested in hearing you answer a question about your weaknesses by going on about your 3 strengths. If they ask a question, they expect an answer. Scripted answers will hamper your ability to answer questions smoothly and confidently. More than anything else, be as genuine as possible, this characteristic is what gets you in. Second, do not shoot yourself in the foot by saying anything that could take you out of the running; there are plenty other fish in the sea that they can pick instead.

Great Preparation and Game-changing
By JCousteau
I bought this book as I wanted to be as prepared as I could for my medical school interviews. This book is the right length and "density" of information, that is to say it's concise but not too abbreviated.

The most important thing I got from this book was how Dr. Fleenor encourages you to view your interviewer as "on your side," someone who wants to get to know the real you and be an advocate for you who presents you to the admissions committee. That's a great psychological game-changer right there for anyone unsure about the interview process. It made me confident, relaxed, and prepared for every interview I had.

I also think Dr. Fleenor's list of questions you might be asked in your interview are a great inclusion, and you should feel prepared for your interview, as well as feel like you know a little more about the admissions process when you're done reading. In short, this book was a great boost, and I'm really happy to be a medical student at my first-choice school. Good luck to all you applicants!
