The one Reiki book to have

Books don't usually come with a caution label, but this one should. Be prepared to: be mesmerized by the flow of words on a page; be warmed by Arjava's passion for the subject; inhale the story of Reiki's journey at the level of your soul; and most of all, lose track of time.

If you've met Arjava, you'll recognize his voice. It's as if he is sitting across the table, sipping a hot coffee, relating his delightful adventure into the Japanese world of Reiki. He introduces us to Usui Sensei's ancestors, and gives us a peek into the original Reiki Ryoho Gakki. We travel in time from Usui sensei's birthplace to his memorial. We meet Hayashi sensei and the Yamaguchi family. This is an up-dated history of Reiki, based on written journals, documents, family photos, and interviews. Arjava tells us the background story - the history and spiritual culture of Japan - so we get a better understanding of the events that influenced the development (and later decline) of Reiki in its place of origin.

And then we are off to Sacred Reiki sites. More than a travel guide, Arjava uses personal stories, and at times, humor, as we meander from one site to the next. This chapter is plush with photographs.

He goes on to tell us about the deities and spiritual practices that are rooted into some of the beliefs and techniques of the Reiki we do today. This tapestry of spiritual identity helps to explain the dynamic realm of guidance and power, available to us in Reiki practice.

The final chapter covers healing with Reiki, including perception exercises, gassho meditation, and Japanese techniques. There are also interviews with Fumio Ogawa sensei, and Chiyoko Yamaguchi sensei.

Although designed for those who teach, this book is a valuable resource for everyone who practices Reiki. I would also recommend it for those who have an interest in learning more about this simple, yet powerfully effective, Japanese healing art.

Wonderful book, a " must read" of Japanese Reiki

I love this book heartily and read it all the time whenever I am free.
Frank give us a clear picture about traditional japanese reiki history and technique.
You can get the true spirit of reiki through this wonderful book.

The most important thing is that Frank always account for the imformation source of each topic
He always tell us when regarding to some topic
Koyama sensei(teacher) says...
Ogawa sensei says...
Chiyoko sensei says...
and his opinion is ....

Frank never mix what he haved learned from those teacher with his own opinion.

Just another Reiki book

Another book about Reiki by Frank Better. I consider this author to be one of the best Reiki teachers in the world. But this work is not grounbreaking. It's "just another book about Reiki".

I love the history part, but it's not a complete history - still, it provides some new information about Reiki which can be used as a reference to Reiki teachers. I also enjoy the part about roots of Reiki and historical sites that Petter describes. This, along with a lot of photos, makes this a curious and enjoyable read.

Finally, the information provided by Mrs Yamaguchi and the Gakkai organization is also a great reference resource for every Reiki teacher.

Thus, my opinion is simple - it's a good, informing, enjoyable book, which is not groundbreaking, but it's a nice resource for every Reiki teacher and practitioner out there.

About the Author
James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology: Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Renting this book for my upcoming semester at College. This book is in great condition, granted I thought it was going to be a little poor only because I am only renting it. I love his writing style

The author writes this book as if he was sitting in front of you and you both were having a conversation over coffee. I love his writing style, his ways of simplifying his teachings. The stories he tells at the beginning of each chapter have me reading in advance. If you are planing to take into to sociology find a professor who uses this book!

Finding same relationship reworked with these early ones ...

While "vintage" denotes an older, indeed one of the early days first works (this is only the third in the author's extensive listing of single novels - 1984), it is sometimes a mixed bag. While it is refreshing to read earlier works of an author you have enjoyed in more current books, the writing faults have a way of putting one off a bit. It is also helpful to know that these early single ones are almost all in the romance novel genre, as opposed to the "women's fiction" ones from the larger, more current series.

These early ones can be a bit uneven, with abrupt shifts. Also, having read about half a dozen of these romantic ones, I am seeing the same pattern of a young girl falling for a type who is a bit rougher cut than is actually attractive to my reading. This same guy appears over and over in these, and I haven't liked him in any of his personas. While he is supposed to be a rugged type of man with some baggage that makes him more than usually skittish, he actually turns out rather abusive at times to my view. The lady love always hangs in there, struggling against the devastation of his harsh blasts, but it gets old and within each particular scenario, much less in one book after another. He seems to swing from devastatingly tender to almost brutally harsh. Just when you are settling in and enjoying things, it starts rocking and rolling on you. Also, the physical attraction seems a boiler plate in one after another, and none too balanced or convincing.

This is definitely a case of a promising writer evolving from her early days. I have been encouraged to note from other reviewers that the later ones in the listing (they come up to the current year) improve in the writing. So, I'd recommend checking some reader reviews of these earlier ones and finding those with the more positive commentary along those lines. For me, I find I prefer her "women's fiction" genre works to her romantic novels, and wish those could be indicated as separate from the others. I understand "Thursdays at Eight" (2001) is in that preferred category and am looking forward to reading it soon.
