historical and practical

This book is in the public domain, so you can download it from several sites on the web. This book was first published in 1906, the printed version has 138 pages and has pictures in it, the e-book versions have no pictures. The book is easy to read and tells you about the history of different kind of fabrics, it also has chapters on more practical isues, such as: what kind of clothes are suitable for kids and how to take care of textiles. This practical part is dated but parts of it are still useful today. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in (cultural) history, fashion design, sewing or textiles.

is simple and dignified and has a certain archaic beauty and quaintness
that the huge, ugly collars and like ornament can never give.

Many silks can be washed without injury to the fibers, but they cannot
be boiled without destroying the luster. Silks may be had in various
widths and endless variety of weaves. Many are reversible.
Silks are adulterated with cotton and ramie fibers. The chemicals used
in "loading" or "dynamiting" to give the weight lost by cleaning or
removing the gum from the raw silk give to the cheaper grades the
stiff, harsh feeling and cause the splitting and cracking of the silk,
hence the quality of the fiber should be considered when selecting a
silk, not the weight. Taffeta is often heavily loaded.

The position for hooks and eyes should be marked before sewing on. The
simplest, though least desirable, method of sewing-on these fastenings
is to place the eye at the edge of the seam or facing and the hook

preferable method is to baste a bias strip of crinoline along the
positions to be occupied by the hooks and eyes; this gives strength to
the finish. Sufficient material should be allowed for folding over the
shanks after the hooks and eyes have been sewed on, or they may be
covered with silk ribbon, slipping the edge under the beak of each hook
and then catstitched in position.

Historical lessons in dressmaking - good for reenactrs and serious seamstresses

This book was actually lessons about different fabrics and sewing of clothing including names/origins of fabrics, how-to, and tips and tricks of sewing. It was interesting to see that fabrics we have today of the same name are not always the same thing as some fabrics of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Excellent advice for making period clothing. There is also references to old books on fabric and dressmaking that could be a help for continued study on this subject in that time period. For someone interested in the domestic arts and culture of this time period, this book is an interesting read.

The authors adhere to a fairly strict interpretation of the Qu'ran, so there is no reference whatsoever to dating and they advocate as much separation of the genders as possible. There is also no reference to LGBTQ issues, which is in keeping with the conservative tenor of the book. The approach is positive, encouraging young Muslims to be respectful of both themselves and others. The cover and chapter titles would suggest that the language is teen-friendly, but the tone of the text is academic, dealing more with the Qu'ranic justifications for Islamic law than with helpful advice for reconciling these laws with Western culture. This volume will certainly be what some Muslim teens are looking for, but will not appeal to all. The lack of an index also impedes access to information. Habeeb Quadri: Habeeb Quadri is Principal of the MCC Full Time School in Morton Grove, Illinois. He has a Bachelors in Teaching of History and a Masters in School Administration. He is currently taking courses at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education's Principal's Center, where he has accumulated over 150 clock hours of instructions. In addition to teaching Habeeb has delivered hundreds of lectures throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad, on Islam, society, and social problems confronting Muslim youth and the community at large for the last 15 years.

Sa'ad Quadri: Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, Sa'ad spent his entire youth studying in public schools. He completed his high school a year early in order to pursue his studies in Islamic Sciences at the Institute of Islamic Education. Thereafter he attended Northern Illinois University where he majored in English and minored in History. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Education at DePaul University. By profession, Sa'ad is a teacher and dean at the College Preparatory School of America (CPSA), Located in Lombard, Illinois.

Very practical

This is a wonderful book. Each chapter is a separate entity so you may jump around. It is wonderful for high school and college students struggling with keeping their hearts clean. It's great to read on your own or to use for a halaqa. The chapters are short and to the point and very engaging. I love the practical solutions at the end of each chapters. I highly recommend this book.

This is a great book to buy for teens

This is a great book to buy for teens! It addresses many issues that and concerns that are relevant to our society, but from an educated Muslim American perspective. When was the last time someone talked about "taboo" topics such as pornography or depression and other mental illnesses? The book deals with difficult ideas such as the ones mentioned above and also everyday questions and struggles that the average Muslim teen deals with on a daily basis--parents, culture gaps, social media, parties, drugs, etc. The War Within Our Hearts is a fun (and funny at times!) and insightful read written by two people who know what today's teens are going through, since they've already been there and done exactly that!

Every young Muslim should have/read this book

I've used this book as a teacher with middle and high school students at Islamic school. I feel it is an 'essential read' for the young Muslim teen. I think that the writing and issues resonate with the youth and it allows sensitive topics to be discussed in a manner that is approachable and necessary. Some chapters are dated (i.e. the one on social media) but overall the book is still incredibly relevant.

Fantastic and Varied Artist

I knew John Singer Sargent as a portraitest, but this book shows us so much more about his art. One gets to watch as this incredible artist studies, travels, and grows in his art. I was fascinated at how he composed his portrait studies, nearly always creating some visual interest away from the subject - a scarf, fan, painting, couch, or another person to draw the eye. In his travels he painted anything and everything, often in watercolor, which is a difficult medium to control, but obviously Sargent was a master. For me, though, the best were paintings that seemed to be architectural studies or studies of a scene where I didn't notice at first that there were people or animals in the picture at all until I looked wider and was surprised to discover it was so much more than it first appeared. I'm sure I will be turning again and again to this book over the years to discover more each time I look.

If you are a John Singer Sargent fan, you'll enjoy this book. I thought viewing on my iPad was actually a bit better than on my desktop, but you can read/view on either device.

You don't need to ask for permission. But how do you do create a life without permission?

The point of this book is to break more than to build. We are not attempting to provide a full-fledged philosophy on life without permission. Instead, the goal is to deconstruct and then offer exercises and habits of thought that will enhance your freedom.

The core idea is that you don’t need anyone’s permission to do the things you want to do in life, or learn what you want to learn or feel how you want to feel. An entire intellectual edifice has been constructed to convince you of the opposite, and most of us start out seeing only though its windows. We want to help you tear it down or at least break a few panes so you can see beyond it and begin to form your own ideas about what your life can be. We wish to shatter some paradigms so you can begin to build your own process of learning and living.

We begin with lessons that can be learned from history regarding our own freedom. We then look at politics, then education and move into career and entrepreneurship, finally, we end with practices for personal freedom. We span the process of growing up and moving from learning to living, creating the process as you go. This process requires knowledge (starting with self-knowledge), skill, experience, confidence, and relationships, but it doesn’t necessarily require schooling, grades, credentials, or submission to a system or plan created by anyone else. The resources you need are already within you.

We peel back some myths and help you see freedom as your own, not something you need permission to enjoy.

I would recommend this book to everyone. Wherever you find yourself in life, I know that you will take away something that you can act on instantly. I find myself constantly recollecting bits and pieces of each section and realizing that I am implementing them throughout my day.

The authors have done a wonderful job of concisely and beautifully describing a holistic approach to living freely.

This is valuable personal philosophy writing that will stand the test of time. A slight dose of morphine for Murakami fans.

Birthday Stories, edited by Haruki Murakami, is a slight dose of morphine for those who are waiting for the English translation of his latest novel, Kafka on Shore. This "timeless anthology" of short stories brings the readers to see birthdays at different angles. There are sober birthdays, and also sweet ones. Stories are selected to provide a wide range of writing styles, from contemporary writer Andrea Lee and Ethan Canin to the famous Raymond Craver, Paul Theroux and Murakami himself. Personally, my favourite picks in the book include: "The Moor" by Russell Banks (a man meeting a woman accidentally on her birthday thirty years later and a love affair involving an age difference of decades is revisited); "Timothy's Birthday" (about how Timothy draws away from his parents after his homoosexual partner died in the previous year); "The Birthday Cake" by Daniel Lyons (a mother who insists on not giving away a cake for their children who are not coming home for celebration); "The Bath" by Raymond Craver (the parental worries on concern on the car accdient of their beloved birthday son; the ending is particularly thought-provoking) and "Close to the Water's Edge" by Claire Keegan (an eminent Harvard student failing to change his lifestyle on his birthday).
The first book I picked up by Ethan Canin was his collection of short stories called The Palace Thief. His writing style already haunted me at that time. What amazes me more in his "Angel of Mercy, Angel of Wrath" is his fast-paced plot and the delicate treatment of the psychology of a paranoid and ignored birthday mother. The dialogues are simple but powerful, short by revealing.
Let's talk about the dose of Murakami morphine. His story "Birthday Girl" is simple and consise to bring out the message that no matter what we wish on our birthdays, we are still what we are. Wishes for a change in fact do not, or cannot, change anything at all". This is similar to the everything-happens-for-a-reason theory in Wild Sheel Chase. The birthday girl in the story does not tell the narrator what she wished on her 20th birthday. Does it matter? Her life still goes on like normal.(Remind me of the ending shot in Lost in Translation!)
This anthology is a fast-read. All the stories in the anthology are very solid, nothing pretentious. It is definitely one of the books you may pick out if you have no dates on the forthcoming birthday - a great birthday companion. What should be mentioned here is the poem (or lyrics?) written by Paul Simon at the beginning of the anthology - "Have a good time". How many of us really had a good time on our past birthdays? Or how many of us expected so? Will we have a (un)happy birthday next year? We don't know. But the characters in the stories tell us that they have something to grasp on theirs - the readers.

Every story is unique, full of life, joy, smiles, longing, and deep melancholy. A most read, and certainly a wonderful birthday present!

Louise A. Vernon was born in Coquille, Oregon. As children, her grandparents crossed the Great Plains in covered wagons. After graduating from Willamette University, she studied music and creative writing, which she taught in the San Jose public schools.

Timeless...for ages 9 and up

"The Bible Smuggler" is a biography about William Tyndale and his work translating the Bible from Latin to English. It is written for ages 9 and up. The story is told from the perspective of Tyndale’s young assistant, Colin and carries the reader emotionally as the young boy grows in his respect and admiration for Tyndale. Although the reader may already know the outcome of William Tyndale’s story, it can still has a powerful impact. (When I finished the book there were a few tears in my eyes). Ours is a better world for people such as William Tyndale.
One of the many reasons I think "The Bible Smuggler" is a great read is that while it was written in the late 1960's, it remains relevant. People still fear what they don’t know, dislike and even fear change (for the most part), those who are in control like to maintain control and more importantly, we never know how long we will continue to have the freedoms we have today.

I bought for my son but I loved it!!

This was a great book that I learned a lot from. I bought this book for my son and thought I would take a look at it before he read it - just to make sure it was appropriate for his age etc. It [...]me in and a few hours later I was done with it. Of course that perked up his interest and he wants to read it. A good book that even keeps an adult interested. I would and will highly reccommend to others.
