About the Author
David W. Allen is the GIS manager for the City of Euless, Texas. He has taught at Tarrant County College since 1999, where he helped found one of the first GIS degree programs in Texas and establish a state standard for GIS degree programs. A beginner text at best

Quite a few reviews refer to this workbook as an excellent intermediate source for applied spatial statistics, however, I couldn't disagree more. If you can successfully navigate the help sections included with your ESRI ArcGIS installation, you simply DO NOT need this book. Sure the data that is provided is helpful, but it is not remarkably different from the data provided in the free tutorials available through ESRI. If anything, this text lacks the theoretical framework necessary to understand the statistical operations, as well as any guidance for interpretation of the results,... which is possibly the single most difficult aspect of spatial statistics in the first place. It also provides no help for more advanced statistic tests such as exploratory regression or ordinary least squares regression. If you must support ESRI press, start with Andy Mitchell's "The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2" to develop a solid framework (though this text also glosses over many important details). For a more thorough and relevant source try the ESRI Spatial Statistics Resource page at: [...]. Make sure and watch the videos a few times through and work though the tutorials before you start with your own data. Also, for a truly intermediate/advanced-level set of tutorials and tools try Luc Anselin's Geoda program relased through Arizona State University: [...]. While it has a steep learning curve, it is nowhere as obtuse as R or CrimeStat and nicely supplements the tools available through ArcGIS. Best of all, its free and well documented!

Great for beginners!

I took a class on this software and used this book for the semester. I feel like I know the material very well know because of how this book is written. I like that it goes step by step, giving detailed explanations and pictures to guide you. Everything is very practical. Great essential tool if you are a beginner in learning GIS. I will be keeping the book to go back through and touch up on all the lessons.

Outstanding book on SS7

This book is packed with ready to use information on SS7. Eversince I got hold of this book, I have used it on numerous occasions in my work. Though I bought it mainly for SS7, I found the chapters on network synchronization and timing truly revealing. Very few telecom engineers are aware of the significance of timing in telecom networks. I do not know of any text that treats this subject so convincingly. In conclusion, a great work.

For ISDN/SS7/Syncronisation in one book the best

If you need to know about the ISDN, network syncronisation and non-advanced SS7 this book is the best. It is a shame though that the book does not cover SS7 user parts such as SCCP,TCAP and due to date of publication does not have BISUP, Etc. The book is extremely well written.

About the Author
Andrew J. Nelson is Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Oregon's Lundquist College of Business, where he teaches courses in strategy and entrepreneurship. He received his Ph.D. and B.A. degrees from Stanford University and his M.Sc. from Oxford University. Prior to joining the University of Oregon, he held the post of Lecturer in management science and engineering at Stanford University. �Dr. Nelson is well known for his research into university-based entrepreneurship

Richard C. Dorf is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Management at the University of California, Davis. He is author of Introduction to Electric Circuits�(7th Ed.), Modern Control Systems�(10th Ed.), Handbook of Electrical Engineering�(3rd Ed.), Handbook of Engineering�(2nd Ed.), and Handbook of Technology Management. Tom Byers is Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University and founder of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, which is dedicated to accelerating high-technology entrepreneurship education and creating scholarly research on technology-based firms. After receiving his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, Tom spent over a decade in leadership positions in technology companies including Symantec Corporation. His teaching awards include Stanford's highest honor in 2005 and three national awards for entrepreneurship educators.

Expensive but very comprehensive

Technology Ventures is a book that I'll be keeping for a long time. It is a bit expensive (it's a text book, so this is not unexpected), but unlike many other books, you'll probably keep this one.

It covers the basics of launching a business, and it discusses legal issues, marketing, and HR in an engaging format.

Who should read this book:
If you have an academic background in technology, and want to launch a new business, this book will be perfect for you

Who should not read this book:
If you are looking for a quick, light read, this book will be too much for you. Also, if you're looking for information about social media marketing tactics, this book won't really help you

What I like about this book is that it really provides you with everything you need to know about launching a technology company. It covers everything, from the conception stage, to the legal issues. It is taught to Stanford students, and with good reason; its a very good book.

Buy this only if you have to

The title says it all - if it is a required book for your class then get it. I got this beginning of 2012 when I finishing my senior year in college. As an electrical engineering major, I referred to my textbooks a great deal. I actually kept most of my textbooks from undergrad (I may be a bit of a hoarder), but not this one. The reason was simple, I didn't find this book to be particularly useful. I took an entrepreneurship course that required this book. This book has very basic econ mixed in with real world examples. It will talk about strategies of a start-up business and then discuss how amazon/google/p&g/etc. do so well. Honestly it is like a blended in version of econ and wikipedia, so not so good.

I feel that most textbooks bought on this site are school related so you have to get it. But if there is a choice, I would go with a different book.

Layout is weird and text is hard to read

Well the layout is a little weird. Not like normal textbooks but it is broken up by main sections then by subsections and I honestly didn't read much more than the 3rd or 4th chapter because of the way it was written. The text is a light blue color which makes it somewhat hard to read for long periods of time. Starts to blend in with the white paper.

The content was dry and nothing I hadn't really learned in marketing or entrepreneurship classes.

EDIT: I guess the 4th edition had black ink. This review is for the 3rd addition.

Hot short series. Almost rated lower due to all the misspelled & writing errors ( examples: "boy" instead of "body", "we" instead of "wet"," were" instead of" was a", etc.), but couldn't because plot was pretty good and steamy. Really like writer's steamy plots but needs some serious editing.

Good Book.

There were some errors in the books. A bit distracting but the storyline was good. It's a very short read for 3 book series. Brooks was a very harsh character and the abuse Alexa put up with was tormenting. Glad it ended HEA just wished there was more to the story.

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in a Nonlethal way of defending oneself. The author covers a pretty wide field of objects for self defense for a book of this size and list where they can obtained. Legal issues being brought against the victims in some cases the list that the author covers takes this into consideration when offering suggestions which is very important.

Neale sets the standard....again.

Even the most jaded observer of philosophy as its practiced today has to be cheered by this book. For Neale shows that philosophy at its best can rise above the endless confusion and ego-driven obfuscation which is unfortunatly so prevalent. Neale's superpower is discernment; he can really frame an argument, and in this book he has what may very well be the last word on the slingshot.

One bonus of this book is Neale's chapter summarizing Donald Davidson's project. A must-read for those new to Davidson and wanting to quickly get a grip on the most important of Davidson's theses. Davidson himself had many nice things to say about this chapter and its ancestors. In one place Davidson calls it a "masterful" summary (in "Donald Davidson", edited by Urzula M. Zeglen) and in another place he says that "Fortunatly Stephen Neale has...expressed my view on truth and representation with great clarity, and has emphasized distinctions I apparently have not adequately stressed." If you're new to Davidson, reading this chapter can literally save you years of study, as Neale has done a lot of the heavy-lifting of synthesizing and summarizing for you.

The way philosophy should be done

This book made me see how hard formal philosophy is and also how rewarding it is when it's done well. Many philosophers today seem to take extreme positions and then justify them with clever (or not so clever arguments). S. Neale seems to have no time for this procedure. The "slingshot" arguments in logic have been used by famous philosophers (Quine, Godel, Davidson, Church) to justify extreme views, and other philosophers have tried to pick holes in the logic. Neale builds up everything very slowly. You can learn a lot by going carefully through his intro chapters, especially the one on D. Davidson. He shows in the end that the slinsghot arguments are much more compicated than the pro and anti folk thought because of issues with descriptions (the connection with Neale's other book). Both sides have been too vague and too careless. The slingshots do have real consequences but not as crushing as the pro folk thought. Neale's arguments and proofs are completely convincing. This is a very hard book (especially near the end) but it is totally clear and well written and really worth reading. It's impossible not to have great respect for such careful work.

Neale's second book, Facing Facts, is not in the same league as his first book, Descriptions, which had a justly large impact on the field. It is a repetitive slog through well-known territory. The problems with the Slingshot Argument against the existence of facts have been known for decades, and despite many pages advocating the importance and impact of this insipid and inconsequential footnote to 20th century philosophy, in the end, the Slingshot Argument is rejected for the reasons we've been familiar with for two decades.

This book is dense, dense, dense
By grad student
I have a political science background so I can understand what this author is trying to say. I appreciate that he backs up his claims with the results of actual studies performed to prove the same point. However, a lot of my classmates found his writing style inaccessible. You have to read every word unless you are skilled at skimming his particular style of writing. That's the kind of training I got in political science.

Do not get this book! It is confusing and boring. I had to buy this tiny book for [money] for a class taught, you guessed it, by Dr. Hall himself. It was painful and unclear (both the class and the book). Get James Q. Wilson's Bureaucracy or Jeffery Pfeffer's Managing With Power instead, you'll thank me.

About the Author
Marc Mancini is one of the travel industry's best-known speakers, educators, and consultants. His writing and video production credits include 12 books, 32 videos, dozens of training websites, and more than 300 articles, with some syndicated by the Los Angeles Times. He has appeared on CNN, ABC's Good Morning America, and Showtime. An Adjunct Professor of Travel at West Los Angeles College, Dr. Mancini was named Educator of the Year by the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators, and in 2010 received ASTA's Diamond Award. His consulting clients include American Express, Marriott, CLIA, Holland America, AAA, Norwegian Cruise Line, Lufthansa, and the Hawaiian Visitors and Convention Bureau. Dr. Mancini holds a BA degree from Providence College, and an MA, MS, and PhD from the University of Southern California.

Official Book to Obtain CLIA Certification - Great!

I am a travel agent going for a Cruise Certification from CLIA. This book has tons of information, tips and web sites that can be helpful. The book was put together in a unique way that makes it easy to learn. You won't regret buying this book.

Excellent publication

This is an excellent size book for those wanting to know more about the cruise industry without having to delve too deeply into the economics and operations. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have passed on to friends and colleagues who have expressed similar sentiments.
