About the Author
Larry R. Dalton is the Founding Director of the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center on Materials and Devices for Information Technology Research, Director of the DARPA MORPH program, and Director of two Department of Defense MURI Centers. He received the American Chemical Society Award in the Chemistry of Materials, and the IEEE/LEOS William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, the Optical Society of America, the SPIE, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Peter G�nter is Emeritus Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and a member of the board of Rainbow Photonics Ltd in Z�rich. His main research interests include electro-optics and integrated optics, nonlinear optics, ferroelectric and polar organic materials as well as THz photonics. He has written and edited ten books on photorefractive phenomena, laser-induced dynamic gratings and organic nonlinear optics, and is a fellow of the Optical Society of America.

Mojca Jazbinsek is a member of the ETH spin-out, Rainbow Photonics AG. At Rainbow Photonics she is currently working on applied research projects on organic nonlinear optical materials for high-speed electro-optics and THz-wave generation. Her research interests include novel organic electro-optically active materials with enhanced stability and their integration into photonic circuits, and novel infrared photosensitive materials for light processing, phase conjugation, spatial and spectral beam manipulation.

O-Pil Kwon is associate professor at the Department of Molecular Science and Technology and the Department of Applied Chemistry and Biological Engineering at the Ajou University in South Korea. His research interests include organic functional materials and supramolecular ordered materials for electro-optic, terahertz wave and electronic applications.

Philip A. Sullivan is Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montana State University. He currently pursues research toward the development of novel organic photonic materials for biophotonics applications, nonlinear optical metamaterials and structured optical nanomaterials. He has worked in the area of organic materials for photonics applications for over ten years.

This 400 page book edited by Amy Appleby includes the best of every book I've ever studied from. It contains over 125 great masterpieces. There are 24 Renaissance and Baroque (e.g. Purcell, Scarlatti, Bach and Handel), 21 classical (e.g. Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart) , 28 Romantic (e.g. Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky), 16 Impressionist and Modern Composers (e.g. Debussy, Dvorak, and Rimsky-Korsakov), 10 Light Classics (e.g.Gounod, Strauss and Waldteufel), 10 opera themes (e.g. Bizet's 'Carmen,' Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' and Sullivan's 'H.M.S. Pinafore'), 10 scenes from the ballet (e.g. Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet and the Nutcracker) and 7 duets by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Diabelli, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Tchaikovsky. The book is beautiful bound with a rugged plastic binding that stays open on the piano.The pages are bright with legible notes. I would recommend this book for the serious student who is playing four years or more. This would make an excellent holiday or special occasion gift for piano enthusiasts. It is an excellent value. Good Collection to have in your library. The piano pieces are the originals with fingerings, not simplified arrangements. The orchestral transcriptions are okay, although I have seen better from Schirmer, e.g. "Dance of the Reed Flutes". Still, they are not over-simplified arrangements, as I found to be the case in "The Definitive Classical Collection", which I returned. My new best piano book, a must have!

I was shocked when this book arrived, it's so thick packed with 400 pages, thank goodness for the plastic coil binding. This book includes a huge selection of songs, many of the well-known pieces that I already had in several other books, but also a wide variety of new songs that I haven't heard/played before. The level is intermediate to advanced-intermediate. I'm picking up piano again after a very LONG hiatus and I'm absolutely thrilled to have found this gem. If I had to give up all of my books and keep just one, THIS WOULD BE IT! And I would still have enough to play for a very long time. I highly recommend this book.

Alot of drawing books I own give step by step instructions to drawing a specific character. How to Draw Furries does something a little different. It not only gives the step by step instructions, but it also provides instruction on how to color and how to use perspective in backgrounds. The most impressive quality of this book is that it opens up new possibilities for anthro artists. It covers a wide range of different types of 'furries' that spans not only from cats and dogs, but to birds, horses, and rodents as well. Beautiful and well done.

For all the stigma that "furries" get, it's amazing just how detailed some of the artwork is at times. Much of it is incredible because of the artist's knowledge of both human and animal anatomy.

I picked up a copy of this book because I do dabble in anthropomorphic drawings from time to time. I usually have a hard time with animal facial details, longer snouts like many dogs especially, but this book gives a good visual breakdown of how it should look. The same holds true for the other types of animals covered in the book.

At the start of the book there is a (very) quick breakdown of human anatomy and each chapter goes over the defining features of the animal type. It's not a perfect resource, but it does help greatly if you're trying to wrap your mind around getting your drawing to look like what you want.

My only complaint really is that it doesn't go into greater detail with the anatomy, but if it had, the book could easily be twice as thick. It would also end up being quite repetitive at times.

Artists with some previous skill would probably get the most out of this book. Even advanced artists could draw some inspiration.

A book for beginners and artists alike

I'm a young artist taking on different forms of drawing, painting and sculpting digitally. I was having difficulty correctly applying animal characteristics to humanoid figures (Anthropomorphic Beings). It's a great book for young and older artists alike taking on the furry (same as Anthropomorphic) world of art. I wouldn't go off the book forever as, if your like me, take on other habits that naturally grow on you over time. For instance, how you start out sketching you may draw differently then the book like more sharper boxy edges then round and natural - it's more of a personal preference then anything.

Very detailed. Useful for my imaging class.

I am using this book for by Image-based Anatomy class and I must say I would not be able to survive the class without it. The picture sequence is very clear and the writer provides appropriate number of images for each scan plane. The information given is accurate. Sometimes, looking at sequences of picture gives you a much better learning experience than looking at a real moving sequence MRI/CT since you actually have a chance to digest information and observe every detail of the picture.

Some cons: I would appreciate a more detailed labeling for the pelvis and the lower limb part. Sometimes, the labeling is inconsistent. I would prefer the author using femoral head through the book instead of switching back and forth between head of femur and femoral head, for example. (I can't recall specific examples right now, but there are such inconsistencies in the book, which is really minor and does not obstruct your understanding at all.)

Overall, a great book that I would recommend to anyone who is studying medical imaging.

Great atlas for me starting out my radiology training. High quality images of radiographs, CT, MRI, angio, fluro, and US. Has multiple modalities in many slices, and adult vs child images which is nice. I wish the book wasn't so large, makes it a little hard to fit in my bag.

Your Ship, My Story

This book and its author have received a lot of media exposure, so I decided to check it out. While Abrashoff espouses proven leadership techniques, the only really new learning is how one man applied the principles on a Navy ship with a complement of 311 sailors. This is more a story of one man's awakening to how leadership is considerably more effective than management; how getting out of people's way is wiser than micromanaging them.
Leadership is emphasized in the book, and in every endorsement quote on the back cover. Yet, the subtitle says "management techniques," not "leadership techniques." Leadership did not come easy to Abrashoff; he had a lot of learning to do...and undo. As he moves through the chapters, this retired Navy Captain talks about his experiences in leading by example, listening, communicating purpose and meaning, creating a climate of trust, focusing on results, taking calculated risks, building people and unity, and strengthening quality of life.
Good leaders can tell you all about these concepts and how they are applied in their organization. Aspiring leaders and those who have not yet seen the light will be awe-struck by what Abrashoff accomplished. Solid, experienced leaders will see this book as more of a case study and a reinforcement of what they're already doing. As I have observed today's military leaders-as a citizen and as a consultant who has had the privilege of working with military leaders, the "system" is not as counterproductive as the author would lead us to believe. Bureaucracy is still bureaucracy, but Abrashoff is not alone in his practice of leadership skills.
Abrashoff applied leadership skills on his ship to achieve significant measurable results. I'm glad he documented his achievements so others might be inspired. I noted that he compared and linked his military experiences and perspectives to civilian applications. Through relationships with Fast Company magazine and other organizations, this author is now giving speeches and probably consulting. This book and the attendant publicity could be viewed as effective tools to position him as a sought-after speaker.
In all fairness, while the leadership principles and anecdotes from the USS Benfold are certainly present, this book struck me as more of an autobiography of the growth of a leader. For a treatise about leadership and considering the title, I was surprised to see such heavy use of first person pronouns in the writing.
Company owners and senior executives will find the book valuable as a case study of one man's experience. Managers will learn principles and techniques that can substantially improve their performance. Some readers will feel reinforced; others will feel discomforted by the heavy sense of ego and rationalization. It's a shame that Abrashoff did not choose to stay in the Navy to effect those changes he says are so needed; instead he left the service to write a book focused on two years of his work and hit the lecture circuit.

Benfold crew knows we're the best!

I am a plankowner of the Benfold and admired Capt. Abrashoff's leadership. His superior leadership brought the moral of our ship from just ordinary shipboard life to a ship that many in the fleet wanted to become a part of. Our ship was a show-piece and we were proud to carry out his orders. What could have been a horribly desolate six months on deployment, including the holidays spent in the Gulf in 97-98, turned into a memorable experience for all, thanks to Capt. Abrashoff who even made UnRep a grand event! We learned from him that although we had a VERY important job to conduct, we were rewarded with pride in our accomplishments. Capt. Abrashoff was a very approachable Commanding Officer, an experience I had never encountered in the military and has been rare while employed with state government. He made an effort to see that his crew not only did their jobs exceptionally well, but that we enjoyed the festivities he provided for the ship while in port. I have read his fantastic book, reliving all the memories of my Benfold life and have used his leadership knowledge to become a successful professional in the "civilian" world. To the readers who feel Capt. Abrashoff is "arrogant" in his leadership style--I think if you had as awesome a ship as the Benfold to be a part of, you would be extremely proud of it and the leadership that made it such a fine place to spend a few years of your life.

Not new, rediscovering the old wisdom

As Yogi said... De ja vu all over again. D. Abrashoff graduated the USN Academy in 1982, I graduated the USAF Academy in 1983, a comtemporary of mine then. Reading his book reminded me of all the things I suffered through my tour of active duty. It also reminded me of the basics I was taught at MY academy. On a theoretical level, nothing new here. On a practical level, this book is a gem, and I have just recommended it to my process improvement team.
The book is packed full of some ones learning on how to implement what a lot of other books explain in theory. The author doesn't plot out checklists, but gives meaningful anecdotes to explain his experience and point he is making. His key points are the chapter headings:
Take Command
Lead by Example
Listen Agressively
Communicate Purpose and Meaning
Create a Climate of Trust
Look for Results, Not Salutes
Take Calculated Risks
Go Beyond Standard Procedure
Build Up Your People
Generate Unity
Improve Your People's Quality of Life
A key take away for me, and in my experience, it is one thing to "COPY EXACTLY" (stealing an Intel term), it is another to understand the principle. By his examples, he indicates that other ships copied techniques (benchmarking) and improved specific areas of performance (all good), but failed to understand the principles involved. This allowed them to not extend improvements to other areas of their processes. This has been mimiced in business by all the failed initiatives that litter the highway, all good if you pay attention to their design, key assumptions, and core principles.
I though the book was well written, to the point, well illustrated with examples, all expressing key truths (though not new, well done). You can find other books that take each aspect (check the chapters) and dive deep into theory, but if you want a practitioners guide to how to get it done, this is a great book.

About the Author
Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) was a student of philosophy, musicology, psychology, and sociology at Frankfurt where he later became Professor of Philosophy and Sociology and Co-Director of the Frankfurt School. During the war years he lived in Oxford, in New York, and in Los Angeles, continuing to produce numerous books on music, literature, and culture.

Christopher Hailey is the author of a biography of Franz Schreker and an editor of the German and English editions of the Berg/Schoenberg correspondence. He has published editions of scores by Berg and Schreker and is a cotranslator of Theodor Adorno's biography of Berg.

Juliane Brand is Project Editor at Salem Press and author of "Rudi Stephan" (1983). Christopher Hailey is Director of the Franz Schreker Foundation, Inc. and author of "Franz Schreker: A Cultural Biography" (1993). Brand and Hailey are coeditors of "The Berg-Schoenberg Correspondence" (1987) and translators of Theodor W. Adorno's "Alban Berg" (1991).
