About the Author

Peter Irwin is a Principal of Rowan, Williams, Davies and Irwin, Inc. with experience in wind engineering that dates back to 1974.

Roy Denoon has been responsible for numerous tall building projects throughout the world and now leads CPP’s structural wind engineering group.

David Scott is currently the structural director of the Engineering Excellence Team at Laing O’Rourke, and David is also a past Chairman of the CTBUH (2006–2009).

Great book

This book is a must for all coaches. It explains the Carolina system. Which history has proven has been a good system. The book explains alot. It answers questions that you have not even thought of yet. The special section by Bob Spear of the Air Force Academy was wonderful. It explained the shuffle offense to perfection. If you are a coach and looking for an offense to run, read this section on the shuffle. You will like this offense and all the variations that are well explained in this section. The one thing that could be explained more is the famed Carolina 4 corners. They could have discussed it more, and given more examples of how it works. That is the only negative of the book. The motion offense and it's rules are explained in great detail. If you are looking for a zone offense, take a look at the triple post offense. The different defenses are explained very well. Smith's famous run and jump defenses are diagrammed and explained in great detail, along with their other defenses This book shows you how you can set up your style for your team. I am constantly referring back to this book during the season.

This is it!

I have been thoroughly impressed with this book. I coach my daughter's junior high team and had spent countless hours on the Internet looking for the perfect site to give me coaching insite. Since this book arrived in the mail, I have not been to any other resource. This book intuitively guides you on how to reach kids of all ages. The emphasis placed on an unselfish brand of basketball will tell you everything you need to know about why this man was so successful coaching college basketball. Each chapter is a valuable lesson on the game with the first half dedicated to offense and the latter portion to defense. Each section has a "how to teach" and "how to drill" every concept covered. He also explains what will be easy to pick up and what will be difficult to master for kids at all levels. His knowledge comes not only from coaching the great Tar Heel teams but from running annual camps geared towards teaching kids 10 and up. I wish he was still holding these camps because I would want my daughter or son to experience his instruction. If you're about to take on the challenge of coaching junior high basketball (boys or girls), do yourself a favor, read and re-read this book; it will give you confidence you're doing things the right way. It is excellently written by the legend himself.

While this book is ostensibly written by both Burdenko, physical therapist to sports stars Nancy Kerrigan and Kevin McHale, and Biehler, who was paralyzed after a motorcycle accident, it is Burdenko's voice that dominates. The book is intended as "a practical application of the Burdenko Method to help wheelchair users...overcome the difficulties they experience and improve the quality of their everyday lives," but the subtext seems to be that "you can walk again if you follow this method." What makes this book so disconcerting is the thinness of this consistently implied message. Burdenko's web page is full of testimonials from sports stars and others lauding his use of water therapy in rehabilitation, conditioning, and training but none about using the method to overcome paralysis. Indeed, there seems to be nothing reported anywhere about this particular method and the regeneration of nerves. The book itself consists of a detailed description of the Burdenko Method, instructions for 54 land-based and 60 water-based exercises, and a short bibliography. Butler links assembly with precarity by pointing out that a body suffering under conditions of precarity still persists and resists, and that mobilization brings out this dual dimension of corporeal life. Just as assemblies make visible and audible the bodies that require basic freedoms of movement and association, so do they expose coercive practices in prison, the dismantling of social democracy, and the continuing demand for establishing subjugated lives as mattering, as equally worthy of life. By enacting a form of radical solidarity in opposition to political and economic forces, a new sense of “the people” emerges, interdependent, grievable, precarious, and persistent.

Judith Butler has been saying the same thing for well over a decade, and this is just the latest rehashing of her arguments. There isn't anything compelling in here. If you have never read Butler, this is worth a read. If you have read anything she has written since 2000, you can probably infer everything she says in here.

First off, I have read this book cover to cover. I have been practicing information security architecture and implementation for 10 years. I really liked the in-depth coverage of information security in general. The mapping of the Zachman Framework cells to the so-called SABSA framework is also impressive, but is simple enough to not warrant a whole chapter to be honest. But what is evident to me might not be so to the novice so I take nothing away from the author here.

However, I am very disappointed with this book from an application of methods standpoint. I was expecting so much more.
At the very least I expected some 'real-world' scenarios to be covered in some detail so the practitioner can use material, techniques presented in the book on the job. In several places, this book comes close to revealing the application of methodology being propounded under the trade name of SABSA but then fails to do so. Time and again, I turned over to the next page in anticipation but was left disappointed and exasperated! The author simply refers the reader to contact him for further details- well that's the point of reading the book isn't it? I bought this book for the details but left with an imitation of the Zachman Framework, which by the way is still more directly applicable to information security than SABSA in my most humble opinion. If I am wrong in having said that, it is because I did not learn how or why based on my reading of this book.

I still give it 4 because I like to round up from 3.5- there is too much good information here for the novice for me to rate it 3.

The book is very pleasant reading both for those who are native in the information security landscape and for those of us who have worked in the security field for a long time. The book gives good instructions and examples in how to establish a business driven security architecture.

The definitive guide to SABSA. If you are looking for a practical and actionable security architecture then look no further. More attainable than ITIL, SABSA provides the framework for solving security practioners vision, governance, policy and procedure concerns. It is a heavy but worthwhile read. For the aspiring CISM or CGEIT I'd say this should absolutely be on your bookshelf.

Not too much, not too little

This book is about right for a new project manager or a small project (hopefully these would both go together but so often it does not). It is also quite useful for an experienced project manager of a smaller project looking for that line that separates the least amount of control from sheer negligence. This book is a little heavier than that, but still pretty light.

It is not quite as useful as the Dummies series in terms of a full service solution but really, despite the titles, those are not for novices. This book has a reasonable enough approach and reasonable enough templates to implement it.

The drawback I found was that the author uses relatively trivial illustrative "projects" so that newbie can understand the principles without getting hung up on details. The problem is even as a trained project manager the examples of PM applied to such simple things as "weekend at the country cabin" projected precisely the image of absurd over-control that is the thing that frightens PM opponents in the first place. For a real newbie, it could even more scary because if that is what you have to do for something so obviously simple, how much overhead goes with a real project?

That is really a minor quibble, though. If you are introducing a novice to the idea of PM, or if you are introducing PM to a nervous organization, this book might be a good place to start as a base case. It is certainly about the closest thing I have found in the past months of looking for such a solution.

Abridged PMBOK

Curtis Cook did a great job of hitting the PMI PMBOK from 25,000 feet. He stated his intention up front. Its possible to hold the PMBOK structure on small projects and he does a good job relating the concepts to small projects; put the emphasis on planning. Recommended read, especially if your not PMI CERTIFIED. He stays out of the weeds.

A great "just enough" info and overview for Project Management. I recommend to my clients, especially those who are managing projects. And those team members or business owners who need to manage projects better. Not to complicated, but enough detail to really get a better handle on projects and the management of them. Jasper
